Galtaji, the sacred valley where the water never stops
A narrow gorge in the Aravalli hills, pink sandstone that catches the light, and hundreds of monkeys bathing in pools right alongside pilgrims. That is what greets visitors at Galta Monkey Temple, just east of Jaipur.
The place looks like a palace with its ornate facades and connected courtyards, but it is very much a Hindu sanctuary.
Why visit Galta Monkey Temple
The complex is dedicated to the sage Galav, who reportedly practiced meditation and asceticism here. Over time, the location grew into an important center for ascetics of the Ramananda Vaishnavite tradition, which explains the density of pavilions, temples, and monastic cells clinging to the valley walls.
The architecture surprises with an almost secular grace featuring arcades, carved balconies, and pink sandstone facades that evoke a princely haveli more than a traditional place of worship. Paintings and sculptures adorn the walls, bearing witness to an art form blending the sacred with courtly refinement.
The seven pools and the Gaumukh spring
The heart of the site consists of its seven kunds, sacred pools fed by a natural spring. The most significant, Galta Kund, holds a reputation for never drying up, even during the most severe droughts. Water flows from a stone carved in the shape of a cow head, the Gaumukh, before filling the pools where pilgrims come to bathe and wash away their sins.
Monkeys, including rhesus macaques and langurs, readily share this aquatic space with the faithful, sometimes diving into the kunds themselves. This daily coexistence earned the site its popular nickname of the Monkey Temple.
The Sun temple and the view over Jaipur
Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the valley leads to Surya Mandir, a cone shaped Sun temple. The climb rewards you with panoramic views of Jaipur and its fortifications, a viewpoint that puts the entire rock bound complex into perspective.
Friendly tip: Avoid feeding or provoking the monkeys, which are numerous and completely at home in the complex. Access is on foot via a steep path from the Galta gate, or by motorized vehicle to the entrance. Sturdy walking shoes are strongly recommended if you choose to hike up.

This site is located on the outskirts of Jaipur, and you can get there by taxi. Once you are there, there are monkeys absolutely everywhere, so watch your belongings. The two temples are truly magnificent, and it is a very spiritual place. It just needs a bit more maintenance.
