If there is one destination you have to try in Algeria, it is the wilaya (province) of Béchar, located 1,150 km southwest of Algiers, right in the middle of the Sahara.
Its two desert oases, Béni Abbès (or Béni Abbas depending on the spelling) and Taghit, are absolute treasures, with their souvenir shops like Ali Baba's caves and bustling markets where you can find a bit of everything... You simply have to visit the old casbah (the old kseur) of Béni Abbès, and take a stroll through the oases among the crops and palm trees.
