Ribe: Home to Denmark’s First Church

Founded by Vikings in the 8th century, Ribe grew as a trade hub on a vast plain just 5 km from the North Sea, connected inland by its namesake river. In 860, the missionary Ansgar built Denmark's very first church here, later replaced by a 12th-century cathedral you can still visit today alongside the town's wonderfully preserved medieval streets. If you're entering Denmark from Germany, Ribe makes a peaceful first stop in Southern Jutland and the gateway to the Wadden Sea National Park.
