Where to stay in Clermont-Ferrand: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
Clermont-Ferrand is built out of lava. Volvic stone makes its cathedral the only black cathedral in France, and every member who has visited it recommends it. The rest of the centre splits opinion: several find it grey and charmless. Worth knowing before you pick a neighbourhood.
Four sectors, from old Clermont to the spa town of Royat in the west, where you sleep among trees ten minutes from the centre. A comfortable double runs 60 to 100 EUR, the simplest rooms start under 40 EUR. The tram crosses the city from Montferrand to the campus by way of Jaude, but it does not serve the station, and a rack railway climbs the Puy-de-Dôme in a quarter of an hour.
Yes, the cathedral is stunning and the surrounding neighborhood is nice. As for the rest, it is a very gray city. Sure, there are plenty of shops, but the atmosphere lacks charm. I would recommend checking out the natural areas or smaller towns like Royat and Chamalières instead.

Cathedral & old Clermont The black-stone heart
for a first visit, everything on foot in the old town
The historic heart is carved out of lava. The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral raises its two black spires above the roofs, and Shanour K remembers « If you are passing through the city, you cannot miss it, with its volcanic stone that gives it an appearance that is both dark and stunning. ». Ten minutes away on foot, the Romanesque Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica is Unesco-listed, and place Delille lines up its terraces under the plane trees. You sleep among the monuments, in pedestrian streets. The downside: those dark facades make the area severe on rainy days, and there is almost no greenery.

The Place de Jaude is the largest square in town: the statue of Vercingetorix, the Opera-Theatre, the department stores and the pedestrian streets running south. The square did not win FloraC over, but their review sums up what matters here when it comes to sleeping: « Its advantages are more about its location and how close it is to the historic center. » The Lecoq garden and its two museums are five minutes away. The downside: it is all stone, very busy, and the tram crosses the square until late.

A three-star right on the Place de Jaude, in an old building. Careful, well-soundproofed rooms: you step out of the hotel and you are already in the centre.
Corum Saint-Jean Budget
A non-profit residence on rue Gaultier de Biauzat, two steps from Jaude, which rents simple rooms to passing guests. No charm, but it is the lowest price in the centre.

Station, Montferrand & Michelin The industrial east
to arrive by train and see the other Clermont
East of the centre, the city changes face. The station is a quarter of an hour on foot from the old centre, the nearest tram stop seven minutes away, L'Aventure Michelin tells the story of Bibendum and the tyre inside the mother factory, and Montferrand, the medieval twin town merged in 1630, keeps its Renaissance mansions almost free of visitors. The Marcel Michelin sports ground is the local landmark: jla describes « A real cauldron where the locals in Clermont meet up for a rugby match. », and on match nights the hotels around fill up. The downside: between the two towns there is nothing but avenues and warehouses.

Facing the station, in the former Best Western Lafayette now flying the ibis Styles flag: forty-eight crisp rooms and breakfast served early. Buses leave two hundred metres away, the tram is a seven-minute walk.

On avenue de la République, the road that leads to Montferrand. Colourful rooms, breakfast included and parking: the best value for money on this side.

Chamalières, Royat & the volcanoes The west, among the trees
for the volcanoes, the quiet and the fresh air
Two kilometres west, the city stops and the slope begins. Chamalières lines up its well-heeled avenues, Royat tucks itself into its gorge around its Belle Époque baths, and behind them opens the Chaîne des Puys, eighty Unesco-listed volcanoes. You sleep here in the quiet and the green, with the tram to go back down into town. The downside: the trails are not at your hotel door, there are still fifteen kilometres of road, and the choice of restaurants thins out quickly in the evening.
The concrete architecture has no character and reinforces the feeling of suffocation. When it is hot, it is a real nightmare. If you can, I advise you to stay elsewhere and flee toward the Puy de Dôme to breathe some fresh air.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Up the Puy-de-Dôme: the train or your legs: The summit road is closed to cars. You go up on the Panoramique des Dômes, a rack railway that takes a quarter of an hour, or on foot: the muleteers' path starts at the Col de Ceyssat and needs no special fitness, the customs officers' path climbs more steeply. Reckon two hours there and back on foot. In town, everything is done on foot or on the single tram line.
- In February, book early: The International Short Film Festival, late January and early February, fills the city's hotels for a week. For the rest of the winter, prices drop. For the volcanoes, aim for May to October: the trails are walkable and paragliders take off from the summit. In summer the dark-stone centre holds the heat, which argues for the west.
- What you eat, what you take home: Truffade, aligot, saint-nectaire, fourme d'Ambert and the green lentil from Le Puy all sit well after a hike. On the wine side, Côtes d'Auvergne are drunk young and found everywhere. And Volvic water comes out of the same volcanoes as the cathedral stone.
- Booking in a retail zone, in Aubière or Le Brézet, to save twenty euros: without a car you are stuck there, and the tram does not go that way. The centre stays cheap, so make the most of it.
- Taking a hotel near the station thinking you will sleep in old Clermont: there is a quarter of an hour on foot between the two, and nothing to do on foot around the station in the evening.
- Counting on the car for the Puy-de-Dôme: the summit road has been closed since the rack railway opened. A hotel with parking is useful for the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy, not for the climb.
