Where to stay in Clermont-Ferrand: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
Clermont-Ferrand is a black city at the foot of eighty volcanoes. It was built from the dark lava stone quarried in the Chaîne des Puys, so much so that its Gothic cathedral is the only black cathedral in France, standing beneath the Puy-de-Dôme and its string of dormant volcanoes, Unesco-listed. It is also the cradle of Michelin, whose Bibendum and famous guide were born here, between lava and rubber. A volcanic city that rolls the world.
Compact and set at the foot of the volcanoes, the city is discovered in four sectors, ranked by the warmest reviews gleaned on Avygeo. Far from big-capital rates, you lodge here for 60 to 100 EUR a comfortable double, a touch more in the charming houses. The tram links the centre to the station, and the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway climbs to the Puy-de-Dôme summit in a quarter of an hour.

Cathedral & Old Clermont Le cœur de pierre noire
for a first visit, the old town and the black Gothic
The historic heart, all in dark lava: the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral, black with Volvic stone, and its two spires towering over the city, the Romanesque Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica, a Unesco-listed gem, the medieval lanes, the Amboise fountain and the Renaissance courtyards. Superb and central, a little austere under its black facades, it puts all of old Clermont within a few steps.

The practical, industrious east of Clermont: the station a tram ride from the centre, the L'Aventure Michelin museum that tells Bibendum and the tyre in the mother factory, and Montferrand, the medieval twin town away from the crowds, its Renaissance mansions and the Roger-Quilliot art museum. Without the charm of the old centre but very well connected, it is the sector of easy arrival and gentle prices.

Our tips for booking the right place
- The tram, the rack railway and the trails : Clermont's centre is walked, and a tram line links the station, the Place de Jaude and the north. For the volcanoes, the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway climbs to the Puy-de-Dôme summit in a quarter of an hour; you can also walk up by the muleteers' path. A car helps to explore the Chaîne des Puys and Vulcania, the volcano park, half an hour away.
- Summer for the volcanoes, autumn for the colours : From May to October, the Chaîne des Puys trails are at their best, and paragliders launch from the Puy-de-Dôme: it is the high season. Autumn sets the Auvergne forests ablaze, and winter, harsher, breaks the city prices. The short-film festival, in February, fills the hotels: book ahead then.
- Saint-nectaire, truffade and green lentils : The Auvergne is savoured frank and generous: a truffade or a stringy aligot, a saint-nectaire or a fourme d'Ambert, the Puy green lentil and the potée, all washed down with a Côtes d'Auvergne wine. Bring back a Volvic water, born of these volcanoes, and push on to Vulcania to grasp the earth that rumbles beneath the city.
- Booking far out in the suburbs or a retail zone to save: Clermont's centre and the volcanoes meet by tram and on foot, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for the centre or the west.
- Lodging only by the station for the convenience of the train: the sector is handy but charmless, whereas old Clermont and its black facades are a tram ride away.
- Thinking you drive up the Puy-de-Dôme to the summit: the road is closed to vehicles, you go up by the rack railway or on foot; plan for it when booking on the west side or in the centre.
