Things to do in Epinal: must-see attractions 2026

Épinal, the City of Images: Deep Lorraine and the Vosges within reach

In 1796, a printer named Jean-Charles Pellerin launched a production of popular prints in a Vosges town that would reach all of France. Two centuries later, these naive, colorful engravings are known worldwide, and their home city still proudly bears the nickname City of Images.

Épinal, crossed by the Moselle and backed by the first foothills of pink sandstone, has remained faithful to this unique heritage while developing a cultural and natural offering that goes far beyond its reputation as a simple stopover.

A destination for you?

Épinal is a human-scale city of about 35,000 residents. It will appeal to the curious and lovers of nature and heritage. It will disappoint those looking for a high-energy party destination or a major international tourist hub.

Best for:

  • Original culture seekers: popular imagery, museums, and fantasy literature festivals.
  • Families with children, thanks to the castle park, SpinaParc, and the planetarium.
  • Hikers and mountain bikers (480 km of marked trails, 900 km of mountain bike tracks).
  • Travelers looking for a base to explore the Vosges (Gérardmer, the ridge road).
  • Reasonable budgets: Épinal remains far more accessible than major French tourist hubs.

Not for:

  • Travelers looking for a typical beach or high-mountain resort vibe.
  • Fine dining enthusiasts: the selection remains limited.
  • Party-goers seeking a lively nightlife scene.
  • Those wanting to visit the MUDAAC: the museum is closed for renovations until early 2027.

An accessible budget for an Eastern French city

An accessible, easy-going city

The historic center is entirely walkable. The train station is less than a kilometer from the Place des Vosges, and car parking is easy and often free on the immediate outskirts.

The urban bus network covers the city, but a car is very useful for exploring the surroundings (Lac de Bouzey, the Vosges massif). Rideshare apps and local taxis work fine, though they lack the density of a major metropolis.

The right bank and its millennial historic core

Everything starts at the Place des Vosges, not to be confused with its famous Parisian namesake. Lined with arcaded houses, including the remarkable Maison du Bailli de 1604, this square brings together a market, theater, city hall, and cafe terraces in a surprisingly compact area. On Saturday mornings, local producers set up their stalls here.

A few steps away, the Basilique Saint-Maurice stands in a sandstone characteristic of the Vosges. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, its architecture blends Gothic, Champenois, and Burgundian influences. Its nave reaches 14 meters in height. The interior is well worth the visit, especially in the late afternoon light.

Friend's tip: The Musée du Chapitre, housed in one of the last towers of the medieval wall, keeps a particularly vivid 17th-century model of the city. Often ignored by rushed visitors, it is one of the best entry points into the history of Épinal.

The City of Images: the city's DNA

This is where it all happens. The Musée de l'Image, installed in the former workshops of Imagerie Pellerin, houses one of the most important collections of popular printed images in France and Europe. Centenary techniques, like colorization, woodcut, and lithography, are still practiced in the workshops.

The visit is done with a tablet and headphones, lasting about an hour for 11 € (about $12). Our take: the collection is genuinely fascinating for anyone interested in the history of images and printing. It is less spectacular for a young child, but ideal from age 10.

Friend's tip: Enter directly into L'Imagerie at the back of the courtyard, not the Musée de l'Image at the site entrance. Visitors who confuse the two often leave disappointed, while the real experience is at the back.

The castle park and green spaces: a city that breathes

Épinal has received the international "Ville la plus fleurie" (Most Flowered City) label and proudly displays 4 flowers on its entry signs. This is not empty marketing: the green spaces are truly omnipresent and well-kept.

The Parc du Château, 27 hectares perched on a hill overlooking the city, deserves half a day. You will find the imposing ruins of a medieval castle destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV in 1670, an animal park, a medieval garden, and playgrounds for children. The view of the rooftops of Épinal and the Moselle below is one of the best in the city.

Further south, the Parc du Cours runs along the Moselle with its shaded alleys. The Roseraie de la Maison Romaine, a late 19th-century reconstruction listed as a historical monument, fills the neighborhood with perfume in the spring.

At the gates of the Vosges: nature and history nearby

Eight kilometers to the west, the Lac de Bouzey offers 140 hectares of calm water, ideal for a day of relaxation or a boat trip. An hour's drive to the east and you reach the Vosges ridges, Gérardmer, and its ski slopes in winter or hiking trails in summer.

Military history buffs should not miss the Fort d'Uxegney, one of the few works of the Vosges defense line to have survived both world wars without damage. The interior is preserved exactly as the soldiers left it. The American Cemetery and Memorial, 7 km southeast of Épinal, is one of the most important in France for the Second World War.

Friend's tip: SpinaParc, a few minutes from the center in an old sandstone quarry, offers obstacle courses for all levels, including a 170-meter zip line for adults. An address not to be missed for families or to break up the rhythm of a cultural stay.

Where to eat and drink in Épinal?

Lorraine cuisine is in the spotlight here: flammekueche (flatbread with cream, bacon, and onions), munster cheese melted in burgers or on a cheese platter, and beignets râpés served with their typically Spinalien crème d'Albert. The Saturday markets at Place des Vosges bring together local producers and artisans.

For a local spot, L'Aromance (rue Général Leclerc) offers market-fresh cuisine with seasonal produce. As for a festive brasserie with local craft beers and live music, the reviews on the Épinal scene are good. In December, the Saint-Nicolas market at Place Pinau transforms the city into a winter setting scented with gingerbread and mulled wine.

Where to sleep in and around Épinal?

The city center, near Place des Vosges and the train station, remains the most practical area for short stays. The Best Western Plus La Fayette Hotel et Spa is the highest-rated 4-star establishment in the city, with a pool, sauna, and steam room. For tighter budgets, several 2 and 3-star hotels cover the essential needs for under 70 € (about $75) per night.

Guesthouses in the surrounding Vosges villages offer a more scenic setting for those with a car. Toward Gérardmer or in the villages of the Route des Crêtes, there is no shortage of options to combine an urban stay with the great outdoors.

How to get to Épinal?

From Paris, count about 3 hours of driving via the A4 and N57. By train, the Épinal station is connected to Paris Saint-Lazare and Paris Est, with a travel time of about 2.5 to 3 hours depending on connections. Direct links exist, but schedules should be checked.

The Épinal-Mirecourt airport is located 32 km away, but flights remain limited. The Metz-Nancy Lorraine airport, about 1 hour and 15 minutes away by car, offers more European connections, notably to Paris and some low-cost destinations. From Strasbourg, count 1.5 hours by car. From Nancy, only 1 hour.

How to get around Épinal?

The historic center is entirely walkable. The right bank (historic district) and left bank (new city) are connected by several bridges spanning the Moselle. The urban bus network allows you to reach more outlying districts for about 1.50 € (about $1.60) per trip.

For excursions in the surroundings, a car is recommended. Taxis are available but limited in number. There is no large-scale Uber-type ride-hailing service, but local taxi artisans cover the demand. Parking in the city center remains easy, with several parking lots accessible for less than one euro per hour.

When to go?

Spring (April-June) is ideal for enjoying the blooming green spaces and attending the Imaginales, the European festival of fantasy literature that takes place every year in late May and attracts authors and fans of fantasy and science fiction from all over the world. Summer allows you to enjoy the lake, hiking, and night markets.

December is also worth the trip for the Fête de la Saint-Nicolas, a great Lorraine tradition that turns the city into a popular festival. Avoid January-February if you are sensitive to the cold and gray skies: the Vosges climate can be harsh.

Mixed feelings

I didn't really fall in love with the city of Epinal, which I found a little bit sad. The city center lacks life and energy, which is a shame. You will have seen everything there is to see pretty quickly. Maybe there are more activities in high season, but that remains to be seen.
