Visiting Gérardmer, where the Vosges mountains meet the lake
Your first encounter with Gérardmer isn't a view, it's a sensation. It is the crisp, resinous scent of pine trees mixing with the sharp mountain air. It is the distant sound of water lapping against the shore before you even catch a glimpse of the lake. Have you ever felt a destination before you understood it? That is the promise of this Vosges gem, a place that reveals itself through the senses first.
Gérardmer, a mirror for your nature cravings?
Gérardmer serves as an ideal basecamp for families looking for a natural playground and groups of friends seeking simple, shared moments. Hikers, skiers, and anyone who enjoys outdoor walks will find a peaceful, straightforward appeal here. This is a destination that exudes conviviality and digital detox vibes.
Be aware that if holiday crowds stress you out, February and August might feel a bit too energetic. The town is a victim of its own popularity during these peaks.
To explore the ridges and hidden valleys, a car is almost essential. Prices can climb during high season, but the town becomes much more accessible in spring and autumn, when nature displays its best colors and a quiet calm returns.
Around the lake, the beating heart of the valley
Every visit starts at the lake, a 115-hectare mirror of water that changes color throughout the day. The trail that loops around it, an easy six-kilometer walk, is a standard ritual for both locals and visitors. It is the best way to get a feel for the area, transitioning from the lively docks to the wilder, pine-fringed banks.
To truly grasp its scale, you have to get out on the water. Rent an electric boat for an hour, hop on a paddleboard, or stick to the classic pedal boat. From the water, the perspective of the town and the sheltering mountains is completely different. It is a moment of pure tranquility.
Friend's tip: for a view that will take your breath away, head to the Observatoire de Mérelle. The climb is short and the effort is quickly forgotten once you see the panorama overlooking the lake and the Vosges peaks. Go at the end of the day, when the golden light transforms the landscape.
The call of the ridges, on skis or hiking boots
Gérardmer is not just a summer destination. When the first flakes fall, the La Mauselaine ski area comes alive. Its trails, carved directly through the forest, offer a unique experience with plunging views of the lake. It is a manageable, human-scale resort, perfect for family skiing, far from the atmosphere of massive alpine ski factories.
Once the snow melts, those same slopes become a paradise for hikers. Accessible walks, like the one leading to the Saut de la Bourrique waterfall, sit alongside more athletic routes on the Route des Crêtes. Every trail is a promise of fresh air and greenery.
Friend's tip: need an activity that satisfies both teens and younger kids? The Acro-Sphère ropes course is an excellent option. It is a fun way to play explorer in the treeline with full safety gear.
The authentic taste of the Vosges terroir
Exploring this region means taking your taste buds on a journey. A visit to the market, held on Thursday and Saturday mornings, is a mandatory stop. You will find local treasures: munster géromé, a punchy cheese with real character, charcuterie smoked over pine wood, and in season, mountains of brimbelles, the famous wild blueberries.
Do not leave without trying the tarte aux brimbelles, the iconic local dessert. For something sweet, step into the Confiserie Géromoise where they still hand-craft authentic Vosges candies. It is a treat for the eyes and the palate. Also, try the tofailles, a hearty, slow-cooked dish of potatoes, bacon, and onions.
Friend's tip: for total immersion, book a table at a ferme-auberge (farm inn) in the highlands. Order the repas marcaire: a meat pie, smoked meat, potatoes, and of course, munster cheese. It is filling, authentic, and incredibly comforting after a day of walking.
Where to stay in and around Gérardmer?
For a stay right on the water, hotels located on the lake shores offer prime settings, often with stunning views. The town center offers convenient accommodations for those who want to reach shops and restaurants on foot. For a more rustic vibe and total nature immersion, renting a typical wooden chalet in the hills above town or toward Xonrupt-Longemer is a great choice for families and groups.
How to get to and around Gérardmer?
A car is king for reaching Gérardmer and exploring the Vosges massif with total independence. In high season, parking in the town center can be a bit of a challenge, but there are plenty of parking lots available. For those who prefer the train, the nearest stations are Épinal, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, and Remiremont. From there, Fluo network buses provide connections to the town.
When to go?
Every season reveals a different side of Gérardmer. Summer is perfect for water sports and long days of hiking, but expect high crowds. In winter, the town transforms into a cozy, family-friendly ski resort. To enjoy the quiet and the fiery colors of the forest, plan your trip for spring or autumn, two beautiful and more intimate times of year.
Walking around Gérardmer means enjoying the city in the mountains. I have never been to Gérardmer in the winter, only in the summer. But given the many activities offered during the summer season, I can easily imagine it is the same in winter when the snow is here. I have plans to stay there one year for the International Fantastic Film Festival organized here. In the meantime, every time I visit, I enjoy the narrow streets lined with welcoming restaurants (where you can taste the many local specialties) and an afternoon of family shopping in the fresh air.
