Where to stay in Nancy: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

Nancy owes its finest face to a king without a kingdom. Stanisław Leszczyński, dethroned king of Poland then made duke of Lorraine by his son-in-law Louis XV, gave his city the most perfect royal square in Europe, ringed with golden wrought-iron gates forged by Jean Lamour, now Unesco-listed. A century and a half later, Gallé, Daum and Majorelle made it the world capital of Art Nouveau, curving glass and wood into flowers and dragonflies. A king's square and an artists' garden: that is Nancy.

Compact and refined, the city is explored on foot in four quarters, ranked here by the welcome the Avygeo community reports. Prices are kind: hostels are rare, but a well-kept double is found between 55 and 105 EUR, a little more facing the Place Stanislas. The tram and the Stan network link it all, and the TGV runs to Paris in ninety minutes.

Place Stanislas & Old Town Le cœur royal et médiéval

for a first visit, the grand setting and history

Nancy's jewel: the Place Stanislas and its gilded pavilions, its wrought-iron gates and fountains, extended by the Héré arch and the long Place de la Carrière; the Fine Arts Museum under the arcades, the town hall, and behind it the medieval Old Town, the ducal palace (Lorraine Museum), the Saint-Épvre basilica and the Craffe gate. Superb and central, very busy in fine weather, it puts all of grand Nancy within a few steps.

The commercial, practical Nancy of the Ville Neuve, gridded in the 16th century: the Rue Saint-Jean and its shops, the lively Place Maginot, the Belle Époque station five minutes away, and the brasseries, among them the Excelsior, an Art Nouveau gem where you lunch under the glass roofs. Less old-world charm but very central and well connected, it is the handiest sector on arrival by train and the most affordable.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Everything on foot, the tram for the rest : Nancy is human-sized: the Place Stanislas, the Old Town and the station meet on foot in minutes. The tram and the Stan bus network round it out, notably towards the École de Nancy museum in the south. The station puts Paris an hour and a half away by TGV. A car only serves to head for Metz, the Vosges or the Alsace wine route.
  • The summer light show, the Christmas market : In summer, a free sound-and-light show sets the Place Stanislas ablaze each evening: a magical moment not to miss. In December, Nancy and its Lorraine unfurl Christmas markets and Saint Nicholas, the region's patron, with a grand parade. Spring and autumn, milder, offer the city and its gardens without the crowd.
  • Mirabelle, macaron and bergamot : Lorraine is savoured sweet: the mirabelle plum in tart or eau-de-vie, the Sisters' macarons, the Nancy bergamots, small amber sweets with a citrus scent, and the famous quiche lorraine. Sit under the Art Nouveau glass roofs of the Excelsior brasserie, and bring back a glass signed Daum, the crystalworks born here.
Where not to stay in Nancy (honestly)
  • Booking far out in the suburbs or towards the city exit to save: Nancy is lived in the centre, on foot, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for the Old Town, Stanislas or the station.
  • Taking a room over the Place Stanislas or a terrace street for light sleepers: on fine summer evenings, the light show and the terraces liven things late; better a courtyard room.
  • Settling for a 'cheap' motorway hotel at the edge of Nancy: the compact centre makes it pointless to move away, and all the charm is around the square, not on the outskirts.

Where to stay in Nancy on a budget?
The hotels near the station (ibis budget, ibis Styles) from 50-75 EUR a double, and the simple central addresses (des Portes d'Or, ibis Sainte-Catherine) around 60-95 EUR. Nancy has few hostels, but the hotels stay gentle.
Which neighbourhood for families?

Which neighbourhood for going out at night?

Do you need a car in Nancy?
