Nancy City Hall, the golden facade of Place Stanislas
At the far end of Place Stanislas, framed by wrought iron gates accented with gold, stands a building locals refer to simply as the City Hall. Its long, symmetrical classical facade catches the evening light in a distinct way. The pale stone seems to glow as the sun dips below the horizon across the square.
Why visit Nancy City Hall?
Constructed between 1752 and 1755 under the direction of architect Emmanuel Héré, the building is a key part of the monumental complex commissioned by Stanislas Leszczynski, the former King of Poland who became the Duke of Lorraine. This grand urban project, designed to connect the old town to the new district, earned Place Stanislas and its surroundings a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983.
The City Hall is not just a photo op. It remains an active office building serving as the administrative seat of Nancy. Because of this, certain sections are closed to the public except during guided tours or special heritage events.

These spaces are primarily accessible through guided tours, often organized by the Nancy tourism office or held during specific events. The balcony railing also provides a rare view of the square, though it is usually reserved for major official ceremonies.

Seen from the square, the facade is impressive in its restraint. There is no excessive decoration, just classical lines, pilasters, and a subtle pediment. This simplicity highlights the surrounding architecture, including the fountains of Neptune and Amphitrite sculpted by Barthélémy Guibal, and the gilded gates by Jean Lamour that frame each corner. Pro tip: To photograph the facade without the gates creating a backlight issue, visit in the late morning. At night, the lighting on the square completely shifts the atmosphere and is worth seeing, even if you have already visited earlier in the day.
