Visiting Xalapa, a Cultural Hub in Veracruz

As the capital of Veracruz state, Xalapa combines a lively arts scene with a lush natural setting. Home to renowned museums, leafy parks, and a major university, the city draws travelers interested in both history and the outdoors.

A Historic Center Balancing Colonial Roots and Modern Life

Xalapa pairs colonial architecture with modern infrastructure. Built in the 17th century, the Xalapa Cathedral overlooks the main square and features a simple yet elegant interior. Nearby, Parque Juárez provides an overlook with expansive views of the surrounding mountains. This lively park serves as a gathering spot where street musicians and vendors set up daily.

A Remarkable Cultural Heritage

Xalapa is well known for its artistic footprint. The Xalapa Anthropology Museum (MAX) ranks among the most important in Mexico, housing an exceptional collection of Olmec, Totonac, and Huastec artifacts, including the famous colossal Olmec heads. For contemporary art, the Diego Rivera Gallery displays works by the celebrated painter alongside pieces by other Mexican artists.

Lush Parks and Gardens

Nature is never far away in Xalapa. Located right downtown, Parque Los Tecajetes offers a quiet retreat with its ponds, small waterfalls, and tropical plants. A short distance out, the Francisco Javier Clavijero Botanical Garden features a diverse collection of native plants and makes for a peaceful afternoon walk.

A Lively University Atmosphere

Xalapa hosts one of Mexico's largest universities, the Universidad Veracruzana, giving the city a youthful energy. Cafes, bars, and bookstores frequently host live music and cultural events, reflecting the creative spirit of the local student population.

Flavors of Xalapa Cuisine

Xalapa is known for tamales canarios, sweet tamales made with rice flour and raisins. Another local staple is chilatoles, a spicy corn and chili pepper soup. For drinks, toritos, an alcoholic blend of milk and fruit, remain very popular.

Where to Eat?

  • La Casona del Beaterio (Downtown): Traditional Veracruz fare served in a colonial setting.
  • El Rincón de la Trova (University District): A casual spot featuring live folk music.
  • Los Arcos (Downtown): A great choice for sampling local specialties.

Where to Stay?

  • Posada Xallapan (Downtown): A comfortable hotel right in the historic core.
  • Finca La Niebla (Outskirts): A quiet retreat surrounded by nature.
  • Hotel Clara Luna (Downtown): A warm atmosphere with regular jazz concerts.

When to Go?

Xalapa can be visited year-round, but the best window runs from November to April, when rain is less frequent. In August, the city hosts the International Jazz Festival, a major draw for music fans.

How to Get There?

Xalapa sits at a distance of 110 km from Veracruz, reachable by bus in 2 hours for about $6.80*. From Mexico City, the bus ride takes 4 hours and 30 minutes and costs around $21*. Xalapa does have its own airport, El Lencero, but regular commercial flights mostly use the airport in Veracruz.

How to Get Around?

Downtown Xalapa is easy to explore on foot, while public transit and taxis are readily available and reasonably priced for reaching outlying neighborhoods.

A gray and cold capital

The capital of the state of Veracruz is pretty cold, dense, and noisy. Located in the highlands, you easily lose 10 degrees in temperature and the cloud cover doesn't let a single ray of sunshine through. As for the monuments in the city center, there isn't anything too special. But the Anthropology Museum focused on the pre-Hispanic cultures of the Gulf of Mexico is worth the trip!
