#1 Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam)
The Rijksmuseum is the most visited museum in the Netherlands, drawing huge crowds daily. Its roots stretch back to an art gallery opened in 1800. Following a decade-long overhaul, it reopened in 2013 as the premier cultural stop in Amsterdam. Visitors come to see masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age by Vermeer, Hals, and Steen. The main attraction is Rembrandt's famous painting The Night Watch (De Nachtwacht). Beyond that canvas, the museum holds centuries of art, best explored independently or on a multilingual guided tour.
