Musée de Volendam

The guardian of traditions in the most famous Dutch fishing village

The Volendam Museum has stood in the heart of Volendam since 1977. It serves as a witness to an era when fishing nets dried in front of every home and traditional costume was part of daily life. In this historic building, you travel back to the Volendam of 1850 to 1950, a pivotal period when this IJsselmeer village transformed into a sought after destination for artists arriving from across Europe.

Why is the Volendam Museum so compelling?

Driven by passionate volunteers, this place is not just another dusty museum. It is a time machine. Its collections gather costumes and jewelry, photographs, paintings, sculptures, pottery, antique interiors, and objects related to the fishing industry. The undisputed star? The cigar band house, an extraordinary work composed of 11 million bands assembled by a former monk. These colorful mosaics represent monuments from around the world and famous works of art.

Works from renowned painters like Henricus Rol and Edwin Austrin Abbey sit alongside fishing gear and traditional costumes. This contrast creates a unique atmosphere where art meets craft, and where beauty enters a dialogue with utility.

Traditional costumes: much more than mere clothing

The Volendam costume (klederdracht) is world famous, and the museum reveals all its secrets. You will discover an impressive variety of outfits, including everyday wear, winter clothes, mourning attire, and church garments, complete with their caps and accessories. Every detail carries meaning. The color of a ribbon, the shape of a cap, or the number of buttons on a bodice tell the story of the age, marital status, and even the personality of the wearer.

Women wore these elaborate costumes with immense pride. Men, in their black baggy trousers and striped shirts, were not to be outdone. These outfits were not just for tourists. They were an integral part of the Volendam identity.

Diving into the interiors of the past

The museum reconstructs various living rooms from the 1815 to 1920 period, a local fishing school, shops, and even a replica of a ship's forward deck showing life at sea. In these meticulously recreated spaces, you gain a better understanding of the harshness of the fishermen's existence.

The rooms are cramped, the beds are short, and the dark wood furniture testifies to a life that was Spartan yet neat. Delft blue pottery adorns the buffets, providing the only touch of color in these austere interiors.

The cigar band house: a treasure of patience

This extraordinary collection was started in 1947 and has been one of the museum's main attractions since 1995. Imagine the meticulous work required to assemble 11 million small colored bands into mosaics depicting the Eiffel Tower, windmills, and master paintings.

This hypnotic work illustrates the legendary patience of the Dutch and their eye for detail. Every visitor, child or adult, remains wide eyed before these miniature constructions of breathtaking precision.

Exhibitions that bring the present to life

In 2025, the museum honors music with the exhibition Volendam, a musical odyssey through the century, celebrating legendary groups like The Cats and BZN, as well as contemporary artists. Another temporary exhibition, Onderbroken Tijd (Interrupted Time), commemorates the 25th anniversary of the tragic 't Hemeltje cafe fire in 2001, an event that deeply affected the community.

These exhibitions remind us that Volendam is not frozen in the past. It is a living village that continues to write its own history.

A visit for everyone

The museum offers treasure hunts for children, including a photo puzzle for ages 4 to 7 and a word riddle for ages 8 to 12. New this season: magic wands allow young visitors to move a rat, bring a spider to life, or trigger sounds using interactive special effects.

A tip from a friend: Visit the museum after enjoying fresh herring at the port. This transition from the maritime present to the village past makes the experience even more striking. If you can, plan one hour for your visit. It is enough to see everything without feeling rushed.

Doesn't look like much, but it's interesting

In a fishing village that is pretty well known in the Netherlands, this small museum that does not look like much is a nice surprise. You can see how people lived back in the day and it is informative.
