When Art Breathes Like a Living Organism
You step into near total darkness. All around you, constantly evolving projections, light installations, and digital environments react to your presence, your movement, and sometimes even your stillness.
Nothing here is static. The core artworks at teamLab Biovortex Kyoto are not solid objects, as they are born from the interaction between air, light, water, and bubbles, following the guiding concept of the venue: "environmental phenomena."
Why Visit teamLab Biovortex Kyoto
Opened on October 7, 2025, this museum is presented as the largest museum by the teamLab collective in Japan, featuring around 50 digital artworks spread across more than 10,000 square metres. It is the collective's third permanent museum in the country, following those in Tokyo (Borderless) and Fukuoka (Forest).
The venue is part of the development project for the southeastern area of Kyoto Station. Several artworks on display are entirely new, including a Japanese premiere and two world premieres.
An Experience to Live with Your Whole Body
The museum spans multiple levels, where installations use light, projections, objects, and sound creatively. Many change depending on visitor presence, so approaching, stopping, or raising your arms alters what happens around you.
A space named Athletics Forest pushes this logic further, functioning as a high dimensional physical creative space built on the idea of perceiving the world through your body. Time itself shifts there depending on the physical presence of visitors.
The museum also offers a large play space designed for both children and adults.
Friendly tip: Visits are strictly by advance timed-entry slot. Booking online ahead of time is strongly recommended before heading to the venue.

How long for this activity
Expect plenty of walking across multiple levels in a dim, maze-like environment at teamLab Biovortex Kyoto. Plan for at least two hours, or even half a day if you want to experience every installation.
*Information subject to change
Opened in 2025, this is one of the new kids on the teamLab block. While my favorite remains the one in Osaka's botanical garden, this one, like its Tokyo counterpart, is really nice to do at least once, even though it is crowded and a selfie paradise. The room right up top with all the greenery is truly gorgeous! Some rooms are the exact same as in Tokyo, so on a trip I would recommend doing just one of them between Planets and Biovortex, with a preference for the latter if you have to choose.
