Visiting the Saint-Pierre Theatre

The Saint-Pierre Theatre served as a primary artistic hub for Martinique until 1902, when a volcanic eruption left it almost entirely in ruins.

History

It was Sainval, a merchant from Saint-Pierre, who submitted a proposal to colonial authorities in 1780 regarding the importance of a cultural venue like a theater. He argued that thanks to such a space, in the span of a few years, the inhabitants of Martinique and the European continent would differ only by their climate.

The first Saint-Pierre Theatre was a private venture launched by four merchants in 1786. It immediately drew a loyal and regular audience of city dwellers, wealthy planters, and military personnel. The enslaved people who attended performances were present only to accompany their owners.

Hurricanes caused significant damage to the theater, first in 1813, which forced the owners into three years of repairs. The storm of 1830 proved more violent, and the building underwent restoration until 1836. A major change was implemented during this period, as seating was now determined by the price paid rather than the color of one's skin.

In 1891, another hurricane damaged the structure to such an extent that it required nine years of repairs, but it was subsequently considered the most beautiful building in the Antilles. Unfortunately, the director fell so deeply into debt that the theater was officially declared bankrupt in 1901. Then, just as everyone hoped for a revival, the eruption of Mount Pelee on May 8, 1902, almost completely destroyed the building.

The Ruins

Sadly, very little remains of this magnificent theater. You can still see a superb horseshoe-shaped iron staircase, two bronze dolphins that are remnants of an opulent fountain, black marble floor tiles where the vestibule once stood, and other traces of a glorious and resplendent past. Visitors will also notice a later addition, a statue made of volcanic rock that symbolizes "Saint-Pierre rising from its ashes."

Experience the history of St Pierre by discovering its old theater

Inspired by the theater in Bordeaux, the Saint-Pierre Theatre is one of the major monuments in the city of Saint-Pierre. This ruin, swallowed by Mount Pelée, lets you understand the cultural, economic, and political importance of Saint-Pierre before the eruption of 1902.

Even today, you can walk up the majestic stairs and discover the architecture of this place, which is steeped in history.

If you lean in a little, you can also see the cell of Cyparis, one of the only survivors of the eruption.

Happy exploring.
