The Millau Viaduct at a glance
As the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world, the Millau Viaduct gracefully spans the Tarn river. This engineering marvel connects Béziers to Clermont-Ferrand. Located in the Aveyron department, the structure is notable for how well it integrates into the surrounding landscape. It has become a significant destination in its own right, drawing more than one million visitors each year.
Planning for the bridge began in 1989 to alleviate heavy traffic congestion during the peak summer vacation season. Construction started in 2001 after a contract was awarded to the British architect Norman Foster. Despite the massive scale of the project, workers finished the bridge in just three years. The technical achievement required 85,000 cubic meters of concrete, a mast reaching 340 meters in height, and a deck stretching 2,460 meters long by 32 meters wide.
The project faced significant controversy before construction began, as critics argued that it would cause visual and noise pollution while threatening the environment. It eventually won over the public. The total cost of 400 million EUR (about 435 million USD) was covered by a consortium led by the primary concessionaire Eiffage, alongside several national groups, including the Eiffel company, which manufactured the steel deck.
This giant of steel and concrete provides the fastest and most efficient route for vehicles traveling between Paris and the Mediterranean. The drive takes you through wild, green regions including Auvergne, Gévaudan, Rouergue, and Languedoc. If your schedule allows, stop at the Brocuéjouls rest area, which is the closest to the site. You will find a clear vantage point from the observation deck and can visit the free museum dedicated to the structure. The museum features virtual reality exhibits to explore the interior of the bridge, photo galleries detailing the construction timeline, and several options for food and drink. While pedestrian access is prohibited, the bridge occasionally opens for special events like organized races.
Stunning viaduct that doesn't ruin this beautiful region in the slightest.
Kudos to the architects, it is the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the world after all.
Small downside, €13 for a car to pass through in summer...
