Why Visit Puy du Fou?
One of the World's Best Theme Parks
Puy du Fou draws over 2 million visitors each year. The park brings local and national history to life from the Middle Ages to the 20th century through massive theatrical productions, live actors, and high-end pyrotechnic special effects. Constantly reinventing itself, the park owes its international acclaim to the sheer quality of its performances. Honored with a Thea Classic Award, it stands out as a favorite European theme park for international travelers.
Puy du Fou Shows
Set across 123 acres of lush forest, the park is home to more than 2,000 animals, including horses, birds of prey, wolves, and bison that take part in the live performances.
The park hosts around twenty shows ranging from a few minutes to 35 minutes long. Seeing all of them in a single day is practically impossible. To make the most of your trip, grab a park map and map out a schedule beforehand. A smart strategy is to spend 32€ ($35) on the Pass Émotion, which gives you priority access to performances, preferred seating, and time savings. Give yourself 2 or 3 days here if your itinerary allows.
The 9 Major Shows

Running for roughly 30 minutes each, the 9 flagship shows feature high-energy stunt work, elaborate sets, and cutting-edge special effects:
- Le Signe du triomphe, recreating Roman circus games in a massive stadium
- Les Vikings, staging a medieval village defending against a Viking raid
- Le Bal des Oiseaux Fantômes, an aerial ballet featuring 200 birds of prey soaring overhead
- Le Secret de la Lance, an action-packed siege of a fortress inspired by Joan of Arc
- Mousquetaire de Richelieu, a swashbuckling cloak-and-dagger adventure with flamenco dancing on water
- Le Dernier Panache, following the historic Vendéen hero Charette through shifting staging and a 360-degree theater screen
- Le Mime et l'Étoile, combining live acting and projection mapping to tell a poetic romance about the dawn of cinema
- L'Épée du Roi Arthur, bringing the legend of the Knights of the Round Table to life
- Les Noces de Feu, a nighttime aquatic water ballet blending music, pyrotechnics, and lighting effects

The 4 Immersive Walkthrough Experiences
If you have 20 to 30 minutes between major shows, step into one of the 4 immersive walkthrough attractions at Puy du Fou. These have no fixed showtimes, so you can walk right in whenever you please. Instead of watching passively from a seat, you walk through detailed walkthrough sets where actors and environmental design plunge you directly into the narrative:
- La Renaissance du Château, revealing the history behind the historic Château des Epesses
- Le Premier Royaume, following in the footsteps of Clovis, King of the Franks
- Le Mystère de la Pérouse, bringing you aboard the ill-fated voyage of a renowned French sea captain
- Les Amoureux de Verdun, taking you through a World War I frontline trench on Christmas Eve
Other Performances
Puy du Fou also runs smaller street theater acts and mini-shows lasting just a few minutes. These draw smaller crowds and take place right in the village squares, featuring attractions like the Automates Musiciens and the Grand Carillon. While you do not need to rush to these if you are pressed for time, they add great flavor to the park environment, especially if you are traveling with young children who tend to love them.
4 Period Villages, 4 Distinct Vibes
Simply walking through the Grand Parc transports you across centuries of European history.
Le Bourg Bérard
Formerly called Bourg 1900, this area reconstructs the town square of a turn-of-the-century village during the Belle Époque. It is the most modern corner of the park, packed with gift shops, a bistro, a restaurant, and a period photo studio. The mini-shows staged here, such as the Automates Musiciens and the Ballet des Sapeurs, are a big hit with kids.
Font-Rognou
Previously known as the Cité Médiévale, this zone recreates a fortified medieval village enclosed by stone ramparts and accessed via a drawbridge. What makes this area special is the working community of professional artisans. Stone carvers, coopers, potters, and master glassblowers use centuries-old techniques right in front of you. You can purchase their handcrafted goods at small period market stalls.

Ex Village XVIIIè, this area offers a picturesque, pastoral setting with 18th-century stone houses, tile roofs, and an organic vegetable and herb garden. Artisans here craft parchment, custom decor, and botanical scents. A massive 52-foot tower housing musical instruments, the Grand Carillon, regularly springs to life for open-air concerts.
Saint Philbert-le-Viel
Formerly the Fort de l'an-mil, this hamlet draws inspiration from the Viking show in its peaceful daily life version. The rustic huts mirror housing from the late first millennium and are home to working blacksmiths and period craftspeople.
How Was Puy du Fou Created?

Viscount Philippe De Villiers, then sub-prefect of the Vendée region, launched La Cinéscénie in 1978. Set against the real-life backdrop of the château des Epesses, this massive nighttime production involves close to 2,500 actors in 28,000 costumes alongside nearly 4,000 local volunteers affectionately known as Puyfolais. The show was an instant hit, and less than a decade later, the Grand Parc opened, adding 135 acres to the original 57. Beyond the theatrical shows, the park places a strong emphasis on traditional heritage trades, featuring working artisans preserving ancient crafts, a specialized performing arts school, and a world-class falconry program.
Opening hours
Open for the season from April through early November. The main park is open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM, until 9:00 PM with a reservation, and until 10:30 PM on nights featuring a night show.
Performances are also scheduled during the Christmas season.
How long for this activity
Plan for a full day to enjoy the major shows at Puy du Fou without rushing. If you really want to see back-to-back performances and wander through the sets, allow for two days.
