Visiting Passage Pommeraye

In Nantes, located in the Loire-Atlantique department, you will find a mid-19th-century shopping arcade that is a local staple. Far more than just a place to shop, the passage has become a tourist draw in its own right, visited as much for its architecture as its storefronts.

History

Starting around 1830, Nantes underwent a period of urban renewal and sanitation reform as the city sought to improve living conditions for its lower-income residents. By the early 1800s, this specific neighborhood had fallen into disrepair, with entire blocks of houses crumbling.

Architect Jean-Baptiste Buron proposed the construction of a covered arcade to revitalize the area. Charles Guilloux and local notary Louis Pommeraye partnered to bring the project to life, aiming to bridge the gap between the citys business district and its cultural hub.

Following land acquisitions and municipal approval, construction began in 1840. This led to the formation of a company called Pommeraye et Cie, with Louis Pommeraye serving as manager.

The passage opened to the public in 1843. It was an immediate success with the local population. However, the economic crisis of 1848 forced the company into bankruptcy a year later. Pommeraye was left entirely ruined, and Guilloux was forced to drastically downsize his lifestyle.

In 1976, the site was officially designated a Monuments Historiques (Historic Monument) due to its exceptional architecture.

Passage Pommeraye

Passage Pommeraye is split across 3 galleries and the rue Puits d'Argent (Silver Well Street). You will find 37 shops, bars, and restaurants throughout the space.

The most legendary storefront, which unfortunately closed in 1980, was likely Hidalgo de Paris. A local character, Mr. Hidalgo ran a novelty and prank shop that also offered perfumes and dental services in a back room.

If you find yourself in Nantes, join the 40,000 visitors who walk through Passage Pommeraye every week.

A must-see spot in Nantes

When visiting the city of Nantes, it is impossible not to stop by the Passage Pommeraye. This place, which originally allowed workers to reach the banks of the Loire more quickly, is now a shopping arcade with breathtaking architecture. You will find iconic shops that have been there for years, like the chocolatier Maison Larnicol or Paul Marius, but also Pylone, Sostrene Grene, and Avril. It is an ideal spot to do some shopping, but also to visit a unique historic site. I recommend going in December, as the Passage Pommeraye is decked out in Christmas decorations that make the place even more enchanting.

A wonderful place

This beautiful covered passage reminds me of the Galerie Vivienne in Paris. Richly decorated with its colonnades topped with statues, its streetlights, and its many storefronts, the Passage Pommeraye appears as both an architectural masterpiece and a commercial space. Several entrances allow you to admire its two levels from different perspectives. It is a great place to wander around, look at the windows of its lovely shops, and enjoy a pastry at the tea room.

Central and elegant

When I was a student, I would regularly walk through this passage to save time on my routes. Located right in the city center, the Passage Pommeraye can save you time on certain trips. Young and carefree back then, I hardly paid any attention to the decor.

It was only later, when coming back to visit Nantes with a more open eye, that I realized the elegance of this covered passage. Free admission, right in the city center, treat yourself and go take a look and open it up!
