Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Beach: The Wild Soul of the Camargue

Fine sand stretches as far as the eye can see, bordered on one side by Mediterranean waves and on the other by the untamed expanse of the Camargue. Here, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Beach offers much more than a spot for sunbathing. It is a total immersion into a landscape where the sea, sky, and earth blend into a palette of blues and ochres.

Why is Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Beach so special?

This is not your typical resort beach. Anchored within the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue (Camargue Regional Natural Park), it embodies the authentic spirit of the Rhône delta. Flamingos are never far away, white horses occasionally gallop along the shoreline at sunset, and the backcountry reveals its manades (bull breeding farms) and Romani traditions. The town itself, with its fortified church and annual pilgrimage, adds a cultural depth that is rare for a beach destination.

The vibe is firmly focused on nature and relaxation. You will not find concrete high-rises or intrusive private beach clubs. Instead, there is just a long stretch of public sand where the sea breeze hits your face and you get that distinct feeling of being at the edge of the world.

A beach for everyone

Swimming and lounging

The beach stretches for several miles, providing plenty of space to find a quiet spot even during peak season. The water remains shallow for a good distance, making it an ideal location for families with children. The fine sand is perfect for laying out a towel, and the gentle slope provides peace of mind for parents.

Water sports and horseback riding

Thrill-seekers are well catered to here. The beach hosts several kitesurfing and windsurfing schools, as the constant Camargue winds make it a prime playground. Here are the main activities:

  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Windy conditions are optimal, especially in the spring and fall.
  • Paddleboarding and kayaking: Ideal for exploring the coastline at a slower pace.
  • Horseback riding on the beach: The iconic Camargue experience, offered by several local manades.
  • Birdwatching: Nearby wetlands shelter flamingos, herons, and many other species.

Insider tip: To experience the authentic Camargue, arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you might also get the chance to see gardians (local cowboys) leading their horses or bulls toward the pastures. The low-angled light over the nearby ponds and salt marshes also provides exceptional photographic conditions.

Between sea and wetlands: A unique ecosystem

What truly sets this beach apart is its immediate environment. Just a few steps from the shore, the Camargue ponds form an aquatic labyrinth where wildlife and vegetation thrive. Marked trails allow you to observe migratory birds, and several wilder stretches of beach line the coast for those seeking total isolation.

The sunsets are spectacular. The sky ignites in shades of orange and purple that reflect off the ponds, creating a daily natural show that never gets old.

Beautiful seaside!

I have such a great memory of this beach! The rocks, the light-colored sand, the open horizon... Plus, it is pretty big! I enjoyed walking along the marina and the seawall. With the hotels and restaurants, the atmosphere is mellow and perfect for soaking up the summer vibe.
