En-Vau Cove is a standout natural site within the Calanques National Park, located between Marseille and Cassis. Reachable via a steep hiking trail, the area features white limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise water. Below, a pebble beach awaits swimmers. It is a prime spot for climbing, diving, and kayaking. Access is regulated in summer.
As the gateway to the Parc National des Calanques (Calanques National Park) from Cassis, Port-Miou Cove is a dramatic limestone canyon housing a natural marina. It is the longest and most accessible inlet, offering easy walking paths along emerald waters. This starting point for hiking to Port Pin and En-Vau features white cliffs and quiet sailboats.
With its sweeping arc-shaped bay, crystal-clear water, pale sand, and green pine forest, Argent Beach on the island of Porquerolles is a natural highlight of the French Riviera. Keep in mind that this is the largest and westernmost of the Hyères islands in the Var department. As part of a national park, the island draws over 20,000 visitors a day during the summer. If your schedule allows, aim for the quieter stretches of June and September, or arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds.
The Greeks called these islands the Stoechades, and they were inhabited by Celts, Ligurians, and Phocaeans...
Sitting below the massive Cap Canaille, Cassis Beach extends the energy of this Provençal port. The family-friendly Plage de la Grande Mer is centrally located, while the pebble-strewn Plage du Bestouan offers a quieter vibe. These spots serve as perfect launch points for kayaking or paddleboarding through the calanques for a complete Mediterranean experience.
Developed during the 1970s and 1980s on a former pebble coastline, Mourillon Beaches offer 7 hectares of sand across four sheltered coves. This Toulon waterfront hub features lifeguarded swimming, playgrounds, a watersports center, and seaside dining. These Blue Flag certified, accessible beaches also serve as the trailhead for the Sentier des Douaniers (Customs Officers Path) toward the rugged coves of Cap Brun.
A geological marvel at the edge of La Ciotat, Figuerolles Cove features towering red puddingstone cliffs and a pebble beach lapped by turquoise water. Reached by a staircase, this Parc national des Calanques (Calanques National Park) site is a prime spot for swimming, snorkeling, and dining at a restaurant built directly into the rock.
La Ciotat Beach features fine sand and calm water, making it a top choice for families. Sheltered from the wind, it provides safe swimming and plenty of water sports. A lively waterfront promenade with shops and restaurants makes this the perfect spot for sun-drenched relaxation, capturing the true spirit of a Provençal vacation.
La Capte Beach stretches for 4 kilometers along the tombolo connecting Hyères to the Giens Peninsula. Its shallow water and natural protection from the mistral wind make it a top pick for families. Facing the Îles d'Or (Golden Islands), this sandy stretch offers panoramic views of Porquerolles. The village features restaurants, shops, and a small harbor for archipelago boat trips.
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Beach stretches for miles along the wild Camargue landscape. Between shallow swimming, wind-driven water sports, and sunset horseback rides, this Mediterranean coastline offers an authentic experience where preserved nature meets local tradition. It is a unique destination for anyone who values open, natural spaces in France.
Located in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, a coastal town in the Var region of France, Lecques Beach draws visitors with its clear water, clean sand, and family-friendly atmosphere. The beach earned its fame in the 19th century when the poet Lamartine dubbed it a miniature Bay of Naples. The name Lecques itself is thought to come from the Provençal word leco, meaning rock.
Sheltered from the wind and equipped with showers, restrooms, and benches, this is widely considered the finest beach near Marseille. Its 2 km span of fine sand makes for pleasant walks in any season. It is a great spot for children since...
This cove is really nice and pretty easy to get to, no matter your fitness level. The view is superb with the harbor right below. It is one of the must-see coves in Cassis, just like En Vau.

This cove is truly stunning. You get the feeling of being at the end of the world in a setting that is still very natural and wild. The only small downside is the crowds. As soon as the weather is nice, it is packed. If possible, try to come off-season to really enjoy it.

As you might have guessed, I am not the biggest fan of the large public beaches in Marseille. For swimming, I recommend the Bain des Dames instead, especially early in the day, or any other more secluded spot. On the other hand, I really like Prado Beach off-season, just for walking. It is very pleasant.
Accessible but nothing special

Probably one of the most accessible beaches in Marseille, especially from the Vieux Port. Plus, it is close to the Corniche, another spot you will probably pass by. As a local from Marseille, I recommend going early in the morning. Otherwise, since it is small, it gets crowded quickly. On the other hand, it is a decent place to take a walk by the sea in the winter.

Cassis is full of pretty beaches with turquoise water, some more hidden than others. If you have kids, I recommend Grande Mer beach, which is the biggest, most accessible, and best equipped in town. It is also the most crowded. Go before 11 a.m. or in the early evening. Not far away, Bestouan beach is quieter, but you should definitely bring water shoes for swimming because of the rocks and large pebbles. If you have a boat, you can get to small, wild coves that are sometimes completely empty.
A trendy beach that's still unspoiled

One of the most beautiful beaches on the French Riviera! Fine sand, turquoise water, yachts, chic restaurants, and private clubs, Pampelonne is the very image of the softness and elegance of Saint-Tropez. I appreciate its setting, which remains natural, and its rather posh atmosphere. It is the ideal place for a swim. Unfortunately, it gets crowded in the summer. I recommend going off-season, early in the morning, or in the evening. A pro tip, the parking lots are free before 10 am and after 7 pm.
Located east of the Giens tombolo, La Capte beach is the counterpart to Almanarre beach.
My advice is to go there as soon as the mistral wind picks up, the beach is more sheltered!

La Capte beach is ideal for families, you can walk out quite a ways, the sand is soft, and you can find bars and restaurants nearby.
In the summer, crowds are guaranteed, but if you walk along the sea toward the south, you will definitely find more space!
If you can go off-season, the setting is much more pleasant, with walks in the shade of the pine trees and guaranteed peace and quiet.

The setting of this beach is very pleasant, with fine sand, turquoise water, and green, shaded areas. The place has all the necessary amenities for families, including showers, playgrounds, and restaurants. There are lots of activities offered on site, like diving or paddleboarding. Unfortunately, in the summer, the beach is completely overrun. It really ruins the scenery, especially when people do not respect the cleanliness of the site. I would still recommend it for families with children, since this beach remains very convenient.

I have such great memories of this beach where I used to go as a kid! (And it is still visibly quite pleasant). It remains associated with the color of the water and the softness of the sand. There are also several good restaurants nearby. It is also easily accessible from the town center if you want to take a dip at the end of the day.

I preferred this beach to the one in Le Lavandou. It has the same perks: blue water and fine sand. There are some restaurants that make for a really nice atmosphere. On the other hand, do not go during peak season. I think you will easily find photos online. It would clearly ruin the experience for you.
