Visiting the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park in the Camargue
The Pont de Gau Ornithological Park, located a few miles from Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, is a top destination for nature lovers visiting the Camargue. Spanning 60 hectares (about 148 acres), this nature sanctuary provides a front row seat to remarkable wildlife, especially migratory birds.
An exceptional variety of birds to observe
As you walk the park trails, you will have the chance to see nearly 350 bird species. Among the most impressive are the greater flamingos, which serve as the region's symbol, but you will also find gray herons, egrets, storks, and many seasonal migratory birds. Designated observation points allow you to watch these animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
Educational walks and accessible trails
The park offers several circuits suited for all skill levels, all of which blend seamlessly into the Camargue landscape. The main path, stretching about 4 kilometers (roughly 2.5 miles), leads you through marshes and ponds. Informative signs are placed along the way to provide context on the local wildlife, flora, and the unique Camargue ecosystem.
The appeal of preserved nature at sunset
For a more memorable visit, head to the park late in the day. At this time, the soft light hitting the wetlands creates unique views. The flamingos appear in their full glory, often gathering in large, colorful groups. Make sure to bring binoculars and a camera to capture these moments.

I loved my visit to this bird park. The park is vast and well maintained, and you can see many species of birds, especially flamingos. I saw a lot of them and from pretty close up. I recommend bringing binoculars. Plan on at least two hours there.
