Visiting the Dalí Theatre-Museum

Located 16 miles from the French border in Figueres, in northern Catalonia, the Dalí Theatre-Museum draws over a million visitors each year. In 1960, Ramon Guardiola Rovina, the mayor of the artist's hometown, invited the famous painter to create a museum in his honor. The site saw immediate success, quickly becoming the second and later third most visited museum in Spain. Salvador Dalí is buried here.

Described by the master himself as a "gigantic surrealist object, where everything is coherent and nothing escapes my understanding," the facility is split into two primary areas.

  • Rooms 1 to 18 occupy the former municipal theater, which was burned and destroyed during the Civil War. It was in this lobby that Dalí held his very first exhibition.
  • Rooms 19 to 22 represent an expansion of the original site, showcasing his impressionist, cubist, and surrealist periods without a strict chronological order.

If this non-linear path feels disorienting, that is exactly the point. Among the highlights, look for Gala Nude Looking at the Sea, as well as the portraits of Lincoln and Beethoven created with octopus ink. On the first floor, you will find a collection of 39 pieces of jewelry designed by Dalí, alongside various sketches and paintings. The museum also houses works by Bouguereau, El Greco, and others.

In August, Figueres hosts the Acoustic Music Festival, which draws nearly 80,000 people. The Dalí Theatre-Museum is often involved in the event.

Buying your tickets online in advance is recommended. You can choose from ticket bundles that include a guided city tour plus the Dalí Theatre-Museum, or the Toy Museum of Catalonia plus the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which can be booked through the local tourist office.

Astonishing

This museum is truly astonishing. It doesn't just present Dalí's works, but allows you to dive deep into his unique universe. The pieces are perfectly showcased with a very atypical decor. Look closely everywhere, there are many surprising details you shouldn't miss. If you have the chance, don't hesitate to come back a second time.

Good but limited

A museum that will delight Dali fans, but for everyone else, it is interesting but a bit too limited to the work of this one artist. I would have liked to see more space given to other artists, those who, for example, influenced or inspired Dali.

An artist you have to know

This museum, which I visited by chance, introduced me to Dali and his very unique world. Dali is not just about the works, but above all a somewhat psychedelic universe, a bit like Tim Burton and his cinematic imagination.
You either love it or you don't, but you definitely won't stay indifferent. It is worth looking into, in any case.
Personally, I loved it, and ever since, I never miss an opportunity to see a painting or a work by this genius during my museum visits.

I only came to Figueres for this

During a road trip from Barcelona, we stopped in Figueres for one night. Our goal: visit the Dali Museum, an artist and a character who was truly out of the ordinary.
Whether it was the paintings, the jewelry, or his other creations, I was not disappointed. You can recognize the touch of the great master, who hides many small details in the most unexpected corners.

In the last rooms, you can even see canvases of different styles that Dali experimented with, a truly well-rounded artist.

A psychedelic world to discover

If you like Dali, I don't have to convince you to visit his museum. If you don't know him, go check it out for yourself. He is truly an artist unlike any other, whether in his paintings or his sculptures. There are always details that reveal themselves little by little.

So cool

It would be a real shame to stay in Figueras without stopping by the Dali Museum. Such a wacky artist, and I love him!

Dalí Museum, in Spain

The Dalí museum is unconventional, just like the artist it is dedicated to. You should plan on 2 hours to walk through it, but it has nothing to do with a classic museum. Some paintings seem animated. Sometimes even an entire exhibition room represents a totally surreal scene. And in the heart of the building's courtyard, an old car has water flowing inside it to grow plants next to the driver.
Better than a movie, breathtaking!
