Visiting the Nerja Caves, a buried treasure of the Costa del Sol

The Nerja Caves are one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Spain, located just a few miles from the center of Nerja. Formed over millennia, they offer a compelling experience for those interested in history, geology, and natural formations. A trip to these caves is a solid choice if you are looking for something unique to do along the Costa del Sol.

A trip back in time

Discovered in 1959 by local explorers, the Nerja Caves house cave paintings over 42,000 years old, making them one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Europe. These works are considered some of the oldest ever created by humans. As you walk through the various chambers, you are surrounded by an atmosphere shaped by the stalactites and stalagmites that fill every corner.

Gigantic caverns

The cave system stretches for nearly 5 kilometers, although only a portion is open to the public. The main chamber, known as the Sala del Cataclismo (Cataclysm Hall), is notable for its scale and houses one of the tallest stalactite columns in the world, standing 32 meters high. This massive natural space is frequently used for classical music concerts thanks to its exceptional acoustics.

A visit for the whole family

The Nerja Caves are not just for history and geology buffs. They offer activities for children and guided tours that provide a closer look at this natural wonder. The site also includes a museum in Nerja, which rounds out the visit with exhibits covering the history of the caves and the surrounding region.
