Visiting the Balcón de Europa, a dramatic panorama over the Costa del Sol
The Balcón de Europa in Nerja is one of the premier attractions on the Costa del Sol. Perched atop a cliff, this lookout offers expansive views of the Mediterranean. It is a signature spot for visitors looking to experience the coastal scenery and uncover the regional history of Spain.
A panoramic view
The Balcón de Europa is known for its wide-angle vistas. From this vantage point, you can look out over golden beaches and cliffs that drop into the clear waters of the Mediterranean. On a clear day, it is even possible to spot the African coastline. Whether you are there to take photos or simply relax facing the horizon, this spot is a classic place to take in the natural beauty of Nerja.
A former defensive fortress
More than just a lookout, the Balcón de Europa holds historical significance. Built on the site of a 9th-century fortress once used to defend the coast, it was transformed into a promenade in the 19th century following a visit from King Alfonso XII, who gave the site its name. A statue of the king, located in the center of the balcony, commemorates this history.
A lively hub for outings
Beyond its views, the Balcón de Europa is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops. Whether you want to enjoy local tapas or wander through the picturesque streets of Nerja, this area provides a complete experience, blending nature and local culture.
On the road from Malaga to Granada, I made a stop in Nerja because I had read in my guidebook that the Balcon de Europa offered spectacular views of the Costa del Sol. Indeed, this square is built on a rocky promontory that juts out over the sea, with coves on both sides and a view of the cliffs and the rest of the coast. It could be a good place to grab a bite to eat, but there really is no shade at all.
