Visiting the Pompidou Centre Malaga, a showcase for contemporary art
A unique artistic escape
Opened in 2015, the Pompidou Centre Malaga is the first international extension of the renowned Centre Pompidou de Paris. Located right on the water in the Muelle Uno (Pier One) district, this museum is a priority for any contemporary art fan. Its signature glass cube is impossible to miss and draws visitors in the moment they arrive. Once inside, you enter an artistic space featuring works spanning from 1900 to today.
Eclectic exhibitions
The Pompidou Centre Malaga houses a permanent collection of more than 90 major works pulled from the primary collection in Paris. You will find pieces by iconic artists including Pablo Picasso (who was born here in Malaga), Henri Matisse, Jean Dubuffet, and Francis Bacon.
Beyond the permanent collection, the museum hosts rotating temporary exhibitions that highlight contemporary artists and innovative art movements. Guided tours are available and provide useful context for the current installations.
Activities and events
The Pompidou Centre Malaga does more than just display art. It hosts workshops for children, lectures, and film screenings. These events are designed to encourage interaction and discussion around contemporary art to make your visit more hands-on. For families, there are specific activities that allow younger visitors to explore art in a fun, accessible way.
An ideal setting
The museum is conveniently located near the restaurants and shops of Muelle Uno and the Palmeraie (Palm Grove), making it easy to turn your visit into a full afternoon spent walking along the port. The museum is simple to reach via public transit, which makes it a stress-free addition to your itinerary in Malaga.
Opening hours
*Information subject to change
Interesting for modern art lovers, but heads up, you will have seen all the permanent and temporary exhibits in 1 hour, whereas a half day wouldn't be enough at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It's not that problematic of course, but you just need to keep that in mind so you aren't disappointed.
