Visiting the Alcazaba of Malaga, a city landmark

The Alcazaba of Malaga is an impressive fortress and a priority for travelers interested in the history and culture of this Andalusian city. Perched on a hill overlooking the historic center, it offers views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea, while transporting you back to the era of Moorish rule.

A fortress rich in history

Built in the 11th century by the Moors, the Alcazaba served as both a palace and a military fort. Its architecture blends Roman and Islamic influences, notably in its imposing walls and arches that are simultaneously elegant and engineered for site defense. You can wander through its quiet gardens, explore the courtyards, and see the ornate fountains. The Alcazaba also served as a residence for Muslim governors, whose influence remains visible in every corner of the structure.

Unobstructed views of Malaga

Beyond its historical significance, the Alcazaba provides a vantage point over the city. From its ramparts, you can look out over the port, the Malagueta bullring, and the old town of Malaga. It is a prime spot for photography, particularly at sunset, when golden light hits the fortress walls.

A combined visit with Gibralfaro Castle

For a more complete experience, consider combining your visit to the Alcazaba with a trip to the Gibralfaro Castle, located just above. The two sites are connected by a scenic hillside path (plan for 20 to 30 minutes of climbing) and provide a deep dive into the military history of Malaga. A combined ticket for these two attractions is a solid value for those interested in culture and history.

There's prettier, but a nice view

Of the palaces and fortifications inherited from the Moors in Andalusia, the Alcazaba in Malaga is not the best preserved, nor the prettiest, as it does not reach the finesse of the Alhambra in Granada, for example. However, if you are staying in Malaga, it would be a shame to miss it.

With an audio guide, you will learn a lot about the history of the city. The elevated position allows you to have beautiful views of the city and its surroundings. I recommend buying a combined ticket for the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro, which is located nearby but even higher up.

There are still some remains of the palace that hint at lovely architecture, and pretty gardens with a few fountains.
