Visiting the Grand Place

If there is one spot you cannot miss in Brussels, it is the Grand Place. Located at the heart of the capital of Belgium, it serves as the city's cultural, economic, and geographic center. Grote Markt, as it is known in Flemish, was once described by Victor Hugo as one of the most beautiful squares in the world. In 1998, UNESCO recognized this status by designating it a World Heritage Site.

What to see at the Grand Place?

The Grand Place of Brussels has been shaped by centuries of history. In the 16th century, the first Protestant martyrs were burned here by the Inquisition, and in the 17th century, French artillery destroyed most of the buildings during the War of the Grand Alliance. Fortunately, all the structures were faithfully rebuilt. Do not miss the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), the only building to survive the bombardment. This architectural gem features a 96-meter tower topped by an imposing statue of Saint Michael. Nearby, the Pigeon served as a residence for Victor Hugo in the 19th century. The Maison du Roi (King's House), formerly the home of monarchs, now houses an informative historical museum. You should also see the Maison des Ducs de Brabant (House of the Dukes of Brabant), a complex formed by the former guildhalls of seven corporations, all designed in a Flemish neoclassical style.

When and how to visit?

You can visit the Grand Place at any time, whether you prefer to explore on your own or join a guided tour. Numerous events transform the square throughout the year, including art exhibits, concerts, and the Christmas market. Every two years, thousands of begonias cover the ground to create a spectacular Tapis de Fleurs (Flower Carpet). Feel free to soak up the local atmosphere by doing as the locals do, enjoying a beer at one of the many bar terraces that line the square. The Roy d'Espagne is arguably the most famous, identifiable by the bust of Charles II of Spain displayed on its facade.

The only beautiful spot in Brussels?

Overall, I really did not enjoy my experience in Brussels. Yes, the Grand Place is very beautiful and nice to visit as a tourist. But in my opinion, the rest of the city is not worth the trip. My wife and I felt unsafe in many neighborhoods, and only the city center has nice architecture. Maybe my feelings would have been different if I had gone with friends, but as a couple, I strongly advise against it.

Wonderful city center

The Grand Place remains the must-see spot in Brussels and I totally agree.
The impression is powerful when you arrive at this square surrounded by majestic, ornate facades.
There is an impressive sense of harmony, you feel a bit overwhelmed by so much beauty!
Special mention for the beautiful City Hall, which represents the Belgian capital so well.
I loved discovering it at night, do it if you can, you will see that the lighting of the site is magical!

The historic heart of Brussels

It is strikingly beautiful, and without a doubt the most unforgettable square in the city. You can admire the sumptuous guild houses, the King's House, and the extraordinary Town Hall, which offers fascinating guided tours in several languages, without ever getting bored. Always lively, the square is even more magical at night with the city lights. It is also an incredible meeting place where a multitude of events are held, notably the magnificent Flower Carpet, which is very creative and which I was lucky enough to see.

Not to be missed

The Grand Place is the iconic spot in the city of Brussels. It is a very impressive square, surrounded by buildings with remarkable architecture. You will feel tiny if you stand in the center of the square. At night, the square is even more beautiful, so do not hesitate to wait until dusk to head over there.

The pearl of Belgium

Everyone I know has been blown away the first time they see the Grand Place in Brussels. Between the town hall, the King's House, and all the monuments surrounding this square, it is like a real architectural competition has been going on there over the last few centuries. To make it even better, cars aren't allowed in!

One of the most beautiful squares in the world...

The Grand Place is the heart of Brussels! Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998, it is the can't-miss spot in the Belgian capital. Whether by day or by night, it is a must-see... and especially during the Christmas holidays, Gay Pride, and other events when the facades of the buildings surrounding it are lit up by magnificent light shows!!
