Visiting the Hollywood Walk of Fame: More than just a sidewalk, a permanent red carpet

Walking the Hollywood Walk of Fame is quite literally stepping through the history of global entertainment. This is not an attraction tucked away behind museum walls. It is a gritty, high-energy urban artery where the glamour of the industry unfolds right under your feet, amidst the city noise, street performers, and crowds from every corner of the globe hoping to spot the name of their favorite idol.

Why walk the Walk of Fame?

Created in 1958 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement across the world, this landmark is more than just a marketing gimmick. It serves as an open-air archive, a public and lasting tribute to legends of film, television, music, radio, and theater. It stretches for several miles across the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.

Star hunting: A playful exploration

With more than 2,700 stars, finding your favorite celebrity becomes a genuine treasure hunt. Each terrazzo and brass star is a small monument in its own right, featuring an emblem that indicates the category of the achievement.

The five star categories

Each star bears a symbol representing one of the five branches of the entertainment industry:

  • A motion picture camera for contributions to film.
  • A television set for the world of television.
  • A phonograph record for the music industry.
  • A radio microphone for pioneers of the airwaves.
  • Comedy and tragedy masks for theater and live performance, a category added in 1984.

Surprising stars and trivia

Beyond the household names everyone expects, the Walk of Fame holds a few surprises. You will find tributes to fictional characters like Mickey Mouse (the first in 1978), Bugs Bunny, or Godzilla, all of whom have left an equal mark on pop culture. Certain celebrities even hold multiple stars for their contributions across different categories.

There are also duplicates. Do not be surprised to find two Harrison Fords or two Michael Jacksons. One is the actor from the silent film era, the other the star of Star Wars. One was a radio personality, the other the King of Pop.

Insider tip: Induction ceremonies are free and open to the public. Check the official website for dates and times of upcoming ceremonies. Arriving early will get you a good spot to see the star being honored in person, which is an authentic Hollywood experience and far more memorable than just snapping a photo.

An artery at the heart of film history

The Walk of Fame is not an isolated destination. It winds past legendary cinema landmarks that perfectly round out the visit, such as the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's), where you can compare your footprints to those of the biggest stars, or the Dolby Theatre, which hosts the annual Oscars ceremony.

In search of your favorite stars

It is part of the game when you arrive on Hollywood Boulevard to walk with your eyes glued to the ground in search of the names of celebrities you know. This big boulevard really captures Los Angeles, especially at night: the excess, the celebrities, the neon lights, but also the poverty and begging. It is a must-do if you are passing through Hollywood, and why not catch a show while you are at it? I missed the chance to see Hadestown while I was there, but the experience has to be worth it! And the little hidden gem: the Amoeba Music store if you are a fan of vinyl, old CDs, and more!

Stars being trampled on

A legendary spot for Hollywood cinema! Still, I was disappointed. There is no need to spend more than an hour or two there. I had fun looking for the stars of my favorite celebrities, but the place, taken over by almost nothing but tourists, isn't that interesting. At night, it is actually pretty sketchy and you can smell cannabis on every street corner.

You can, however, find some nice souvenirs at the La La Land store and admire the Chinese Theatre, which is definitely worth a look. Just behind it, a shopping center offers a nice view of the Hollywood sign if you climb up to the third floor.

A must-see in Los Angeles

To be honest, the Walk of Fame isn't as impressive as it looks on TV. They are just small pink stars embedded in the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard. You could almost walk right over them without seeing them. The idea, of course, is to pose next to your favorite artists. There is something for everyone.
As I am writing this, there are 2,799 stars on the pavement of this famous Los Angeles street, but that number is bound to grow every year.
