Picture a postcard scene, ocher cliffs dropping into the turquoise Atlantic, fine white sand, the persistent hum of cicadas, and air heavy with sea spray and pine needles. There is no doubt about it, this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal: Galápos Beach.
Located in the municipality of Setúbal, not far from Lisbon, the beach is part of the Parque Natural da Arrábida (Arrábida Natural Park). This natural park is actually one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, a landscape that justifies a dedicated trip.
Beyond its exceptional beauty, the beach is prized for its quiet, authentic atmosphere. Unlike other beaches in the Greater Lisbon area like Costa da Caparica or Cascais, Galápos Beach remains largely free from heavy tourist crowds. It is frequented mostly by locals, which helps maintain the surrounding wild flora and fauna.
You will find two small, charming restaurants right on the beach where you can sample Portuguese specialties for 15-30 EUR (about $16-33) per person.
The only drawback to Galápos Beach is its accessibility. It is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility, as you must descend a long flight of stairs to reach the sand. If you require easier access, Praia da Figueira (Figueira Beach), located slightly further up the coast, features a wheelchair ramp and a parking lot in direct proximity.
The road starting in Setúbal and winding along the coast of the Parque Natural da Arrábida is ideal for a road trip. The views are expansive. You will also find several campgrounds within the park if you want to spend the night in a quiet setting.
In short, Galápos Beach is a highlight of Portugal that is worth visiting during your time in Lisbon.
In just a few dozen minutes by car (it depends on where you start, obviously!), you can get from Lisbon to Galapos Beach in the south.
I recommend this trip because, so close to the Portuguese capital, you will drive through a very green forest to arrive at a magnificent beach. The setting: white sand under your feet, forest-covered hills behind you, and in front, a turquoise and calm sea with a few reefs full of fish that you can easily observe if you have the right gear.
