Visiting Portinho da Arrábida Beach
Portinho da Arrábida Beach is among the most impressive stretches of coastline in Portugal. Looking out over the Atlantic Ocean, it sits about 50 kilometers from Lisbon and just a short distance from Setúbal, tucked into the heart of the Parque Natural da Arrábida (Arrábida Natural Park). Established in 1976, this park spans 10,000 hectares with peaks reaching 500 meters in elevation. The result is a postcard-worthy landscape of fine sand, turquoise water, and lush green mountains in the distance.
Beaches of the Arrábida Natural Park
Located about 20 kilometers west of Setúbal in the bay of the same name, the Serra da Arrábida (Arrábida Mountain Range) is a protected nature reserve bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The marine life here is also under strict protection. You will find some of the most beautiful sand in Portugal here, including Praia de Galápos, Praia do Alpertucho, and Praia dos Penedos. The vibe feels tropical, with rocky cliffs contrasting against crystal-clear water and dense coastal vegetation.
Things to do at Portinho da Arrábida Beach
Unlike other spots around the Serra da Arrábida, Portinho da Arrábida Beach is not directly accessible by car. You will need to park at the Praia do Creiro lot, which has about 20 spaces, or along the road, and then walk a few hundred meters. The beach has two restaurants. You can swim, go paddleboarding, or snorkel. In 2010, the beach was named one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal in the beach category.
In the immediate vicinity, you can see the ruins of ancient tanks once used for fish salting during the Roman era at the Estação Arqueológica do Creiro (Creiro Archaeological Station).
Just a few kilometers from the capital, this beach enjoys a surprisingly well-preserved natural environment. The sandy beach is surrounded by a small forest, and the very clear ocean waters hide many animal species in a protected area.
