Visiting Montmorency Falls, a natural wonder just minutes from Quebec
An impressive panorama
Standing at 83 metres tall, Montmorency Falls actually surpasses the famous Niagara Falls. Located just about fifteen minutes by car from downtown Quebec, it provides a striking backdrop, especially during the seasons when water flow reaches its peak. From the observation deck or the suspension bridge hanging directly over the cascade, you get sweeping views of the Saint Lawrence River and Île d'Orléans.
Activities for every preference
The site offers a range of options depending on what you are looking for. Hiking enthusiasts will love the trails winding through the park that provide multiple vantage points of the waterfall. For visitors looking for more of a workout, the panoramic staircase with its more than 480 steps delivers both a physical challenge and incredible views.
During the winter months, the area transforms into a frozen landscape. You can check out the pain de sucre (sugarloaf), a massive ice cone that forms right at the base of the waterfall, or even try ice climbing for a memorable experience.
A look back in history
Montmorency Falls Park also holds deep historical roots. During the Seven Years' War, the grounds saw clashes between French and British troops. Informational plaques scattered throughout the area give you a closer look at this history while you take in the scenery. Lastly, the nearby manoir Montmorency (Montmorency Manor) makes for a convenient stop to grab a bite to eat or dive deeper into the site's past.
Montmorency Falls is very impressive because of its height. The trail for walking is easy and offers many viewpoints. You can also take the cable car to go up, and in the summer there is a zipline to get closer to the falls. The site is very accessible, and it is a must-see excursion near Quebec City.
