Visiting Fairmont Le Château Frontenac: More than a hotel, a Quebec landmark

Dominating the Quebec skyline for over a century, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac draws visitors with its medieval castle aesthetic and dramatic perch on Cap Diamant, overlooking the Saint Lawrence River.

A historic icon

Built in the late 19th century by the Canadian Pacific railway company, the Château Frontenac was designed to attract the era's affluent travelers. Its chateau-style architecture, complete with turrets and copper roofing, mimics French fortresses and gives the building a profile unlike anything else in the Americas.

The site is steeped in history, having hosted countless notable political figures and artists. The hotel was notably the site of strategic meetings during World War II, bringing together Churchill and Roosevelt.

Exploring the Château Frontenac

You can discover the interior through guided tours organized by the Fairmont or local operators. These tours highlight architectural secrets and the anecdotes that define the hotel's legacy. The meticulously decorated salons, corridors lined with ornate tapestries, and period stained glass are worth the time.

The lobby, which is open to everyone, offers a glimpse into the hotel's elegance. You can also browse the boutiques and view the temporary exhibits set up in areas accessible to the public.

An exceptional vantage point

The view of the Saint Lawrence River from the terraces surrounding the hotel is impressive. Just a few steps away, the Terrasse Dufferin (Dufferin Terrace) invites a pleasant stroll, whether it is summer or winter. In the colder months, it transforms into a toboggan run, a playful nod to local traditions.

Given its central location in Vieux-Québec (Old Quebec), the Château Frontenac is an excellent base for exploring the city. Cobblestone streets, historic fortifications, museums, and art galleries are all within a few minutes of walking distance.
