Visiting the Quebec Citadel, a historic bastion

An impressive fortress
Constructed in the 19th century based on French design principles, the Quebec Citadel serves as the largest British fortress in the Americas. Touring the Citadel
Access to the Citadel is restricted to guided tours, which depart every hour. The route takes you through the barracks, the officers mess, and the military prison, offering a rare view into the daily life of soldiers. You will also visit the Musée du Royal 22e Régiment (Royal 22e Régiment Museum), where uniforms, weapons, and military artifacts trace the history of the most famous francophone regiment in the country.
During the summer months, do not miss the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a performance defined by traditional military rituals.
A site active year-round
Beyond historic tours, the Quebec Citadel hosts cultural and commemorative events throughout the year. Concerts, temporary exhibits, and official celebrations shape the schedule of this functioning heritage site.
Its direct access to the Plains of Abraham also allows you to extend your visit with a walk through one of the largest urban parks in Canada.

The Citadel is one of the must-see monuments to visit when you come to Quebec City. It has some pretty impressive architecture. Its prime location offers a very beautiful view of the city and the surrounding area. I recommend coming at the time of the changing of the guard, as it is a spectacle you have to see at least once.
