Visiting the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo

The marriage of a Carthusian monastery and contemporary art is so unexpected that the space itself feels like an exhibit. When this union happens on the river island of Cartuja, bordered by the waters of the Alphonse-XIII canal, you can expect a sense of wonder. The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo is a compelling cultural destination, taking advantage of the incredibly preserved monastery of Santa Maria de Las Cuevas, a monument with an artistic and archaeological heritage as fascinating as its history. This is the hallmark of Seville, using its past to fuel the present with confidence and flair.

Merging art and history

Nothing about this site suggested it would eventually become a cultural hub where 20th-century movements and current trends would thrive. It was a bold move, but the CAAC could not have found a better setting to showcase works by Joan Miro, Pablo Palazuelo, Louise Bourgeois, or Candida Höfer. The permanent collection celebrates Andalusian creativity through paintings, ceramics, and photography, featuring brilliant artists in a punchy display where social engagement is never far off. Temporary exhibitions bring real energy to the site, which maintains a busy schedule of performances and lectures. The monastery itself is an architectural work of Mudéjar and Gothic styles. Its history is engrossing, starting as a site where mud from the Guadalquivir was transformed in kilns. A vision of the Virgin in 1248 supposedly changed its fate, leading to the construction of a Franciscan hermitage. The Carthusian Order replaced them in 1400, adding a church, a cloister, and a chapel. By 1500, another church and a surrounding wall completed the complex, which was then converted into a pottery factory in 1841. In 1997, the CAAC found a home worthy of its mission in this site, which also served as a residence and burial place for Christopher Columbus.

A beautiful setting

I was mostly interested in the site of this former monastery, which became a ceramic factory. I really liked the monument, with its silhouette reflecting in the water. It houses two lovely cloisters and chapels that reflect the architecture of the time, plus a very pleasant terrace. I went on a Sunday and caught a free jazz concert (check the schedule on the museum website).

I found the collections interesting, sometimes strange. There are some beautiful ceramics and Andalusian paintings, but also some pretty elusive works. I would not recommend it if you are not an art lover.

For something different

The old-fashioned and traditional architecture of the place is deceptive. The works and creations to see in this museum are decidedly modern and sometimes confusing. Worth a look.

A surprising mix

A former monastery turned ceramic factory, then a contemporary art museum for the last thirty years or so, the whole place makes for an amazing mix. Large exhibition spaces, Gothic and Moorish architecture still visible in the chapels, paintings, photos, sculptures, occasional installations, collages, and political or philosophical messages.

Interesting, but not exactly a must-see.
