Visiting the Basilica de la Macarena

Construction on the Basilica de la Macarena began in 1941 on a site previously blessed by the Archbishop of Seville. The Hermandad de la Esperanza Macarena (Brotherhood of the Hope of Macarena), to which the church is dedicated, remains the largest Catholic brotherhood in the city. The basilica assumes a vital role during Semaine Sainte (Holy Week) at Easter. During the night from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday, in an event known locally as the Madrugá, the faithful carry the Virgin of Hope Macarena on their shoulders, one of the most venerated icons in Seville.

A prominent basilica in Seville

The Basilica de la Macarena is a striking neo-baroque religious building with yellow tones, designed by architect Aurelio Gómez Millán. It stands next to the Puerta de la Macarena (Macarena Gate), an ancient entrance once embedded in the city walls that were demolished in the 1860s. The site was elevated to a basilica in 1966 by the will of Pope Paul VI. This place of worship also houses a museum, the Tesoro de la Macarena (Macarena Treasury Museum), which displays a collection of liturgical objects belonging to the brotherhood for four centuries, along with processional elements from Semaine Sainte such as the robes of the Macarena and the heavy supports used during the procession.

The icon of the Macarena

The Macarena, or Santa Maria de la Esperanza Macarena, created in the mid-17th century, is one of the most revered religious depictions of the Virgin in Seville. She wears a gold crown set with diamonds and brooches adorned with emeralds. Her face expresses profound sorrow, notably through the five teardrops carved onto her visage, paired with a gentle expression that symbolizes Christian hope.

Out of the way and nothing special

I had read in a guidebook that it was an important landmark for the people of Seville, so I went to check it out. Count on a 20 to 30 minute walk from the center to get there. The neighborhood isn't very interesting, and the basilica didn't really leave an impression on me either. So in other words, it is really not a priority, especially if you are short on time.
