Visiting the Giralda

Some landmarks define the skyline, and the Giralda dictates the urban planning of Seville, as no other building in the city center is permitted to exceed its 97.5 meters. Defining this city icon is complex. Some call the tower the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, while others identify it as the minaret of the former Great Mosque. Its construction actually encompasses both. Its evolution is tied to shifting historical powers, creating an imposing structure that ranks among the most famous in Spain. The Giralda is a UNESCO World Heritage site and represents a true architectural masterpiece.

From the largest minaret to a masterful bell tower

Standing before the Giralda, you feel small as the structure looms over you. Few buildings are this imposing. While its exterior appears clean and simple, achieving such harmony and elegance at this scale required an immense effort. Construction began in 1184 under the Almohad caliphate. Originally built as a minaret attached to the Great Mosque, one of the most lavish structures on the Iberian Peninsula, it was crafted using stone from ancient ruins and brick. At the time, it was the tallest building in Europe and already a benchmark for the refined brickwork on its upper sections. Following the Reconquista, the religious site transitioned to Christian use. A 1356 earthquake destroyed the mosque and half of the minaret. It wasn't until 1558 that the upper section was rebuilt in a Renaissance style. A 7-meter bronze statue representing the "triumphant faith" was added to the summit, along with 24 bells, including 18 fixed in the openings of the terrace, which earned it its status as a bell tower. The Giralda is masterful. You reach the top by ascending a series of ramps, and the panoramic view is unmatched, revealing Seville in its entirety and beauty.

The lighthouse of Seville

This minaret turned bell tower is a landmark of the beautiful city of Seville.
You can often spot its top from miles away.
I loved observing its typical architecture at different times of the day.
Admire the building lit up at night, a marvel of detail!
The view from the top is very beautiful, but arm yourself with patience as it is often crowded.

The icon of the cathedral

Climbing the ramp of this former minaret, I felt transported to another era. I imagined horses going up the same path, which is why there are no stairs. The climb can be tiring, but it is still pretty quick. Once at the top, I loved the panoramic view of the bells, the city, and the Alcazar. You can walk all the way around the monument. I recommend booking a guided tour of the cathedral and finishing with the Giralda. At the end of April, it wasn't too crowded.

Best view in the old center

Right in the heart of the old center of Seville, this former minaret towers over everything else. You enter from inside the Cathedral. I was there on a Monday in early October. There were people around, but it was smooth with no waiting, which doesn't mean you get to the top immediately because you have to walk up a ramp for about 5 minutes. It is relatively easy to do, and it is cool inside :)
At the top, you arrive on a terrace located right under the bells. You can walk all the way around and see the whole city of Seville through the openings, plus the rest of the enormous cathedral from above. Impressive!

Great view but too much waiting

This former mosque turned cathedral is very beautiful. The interior is richly decorated. By getting an audio guide, you will learn a lot about the history and local folklore at each chapel.

The highlight of the visit is supposed to be the climb up the tower, which offers a panoramic view of Seville. Arm yourself with patience because it is crowded, and it moves slowly. It is a beautiful view at the end, but I am not sure I would have signed up for it if I had known it would go so slowly.
