Visiting Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church in Oaxaca

Located in the heart of Oaxaca, the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church is a focal point for visitors interested in art and history. This baroque monument, among the finest in the city, stands out for its ornate architecture and cultural weight. More than a place of worship, it serves as a intersection of faith, artistry, and the regional history of Mexico.

Dazzling Architecture

Built starting in the 16th century, the church is a baroque masterpiece that grabs your attention the moment you arrive. The imposing stone facade features intricate carvings and statues that reflect the technical skill of the era. Once inside, you will find a sumptuously decorated interior where every surface is covered in murals and bright gold leaf. The vaulted ceiling, finely carved, is a tribute to the floral and vegetal motifs common to religious art in this part of the Americas.

The Monastery and the Centro Cultural de Oaxaca

Santo Domingo de Guzmán also includes a former monastery, now serving as the Centro Cultural de Oaxaca (Oaxaca Cultural Center). This museum houses diverse collections tracing the history of the region, from pre-Hispanic artifacts to colonial-era art. The centerpiece is the Treasure of Tomb 7 from Monte Albán, a stunning collection of precious objects recovered from Zapotec graves. It provides a historical narrative that pairs perfectly with the church visit.

A Unique Botanical Garden

Directly behind the church lies the Jardín Etnobotánico (Ethnobotanical Garden), a space designed to highlight the biodiversity of Oaxaca. The garden showcases a wide array of native plants, ranging from towering cacti to traditional fruit trees, illustrating the deep connection between these species and local culture. Guided tours of the garden are a practical way to engage with nature and learn about the regional ecosystem.

Stunning building!

The old religious building Santo Domingo, in the center of Oaxaca, is a true architectural feat. The ceilings are beautifully painted, and the hallways with arches overlooking the outdoor gardens are gorgeous. Above all, the museum holds treasures unearthed from the archaeological tombs of Monte Alban, with many pieces in jade and even gold! It also gives a good overview of the different cultures in the region, including the production of mezcal.
