Visiting Hierve el Agua
A geological curiosity to explore
Located about 45 miles from the city of Oaxaca, Hierve el Agua is a natural site famous for unique limestone formations that look like frozen waterfalls. These formations, created by mineral deposits from carbonate-rich spring water, offer a striking spectacle that geology enthusiasts appreciate. While less massive than some of the world's most famous natural wonders, this site is worth the trip for its unusual appearance.
Natural pools with calming waters
Hierve el Agua is also known for its natural pools with slightly turquoise water. Fed by mineral springs, these basins offer visitors the chance to swim while taking in an exceptional panoramic view of the surrounding valley. The contrast between the natural pools and the green hills creates a peaceful setting for relaxing.
Plan to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the experience.
Hiking and cultural immersion
For hikers, the area around Hierve el Agua offers trails to explore the region and better appreciate the arid landscape dotted with cacti and native plants. The site also provides a glimpse into local traditions, as indigenous communities manage access and the infrastructure. You can try local specialties or purchase handicrafts there.
These petrified waterfalls and natural pools are located way up high, with an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains. The combination of all this gives you one of the most spectacular views in Mexico.
My brother went a year after me and he was disappointed. The pools were clearly dried up. Maybe there is a better season to visit this place?
