Indeed, it took Hernan Cortes barely 2 years to defeat the last polytheistic dynasty and bring the last emperor, Cuauhtemoc, to his knees. Inside the cathedral, there are superb altarpieces. If you want to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, you probably won't be able to get inside the building. Pilgrims from all over Latin America come then to worship the Virgin and see with their own eyes the cloak she wore during her apparition. What is miraculous is that this tunic is in excellent condition. Don't miss visiting Tepeyac Hill, just above the Basilica. You will have a superb view of Mexico City from there. You can also take a look inside the old colonial basilica, even if it is threatening to collapse because of the various earthquakes.
