Visiting the Guadalupe Church, above San Cristóbal de las Casas

Perched on a hill overlooking the colonial city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, the Guadalupe Church is a primary landmark in this town in the state of Chiapas, in Mexico. Built in 1834, this church serves as a site for pilgrimage and reflection, while providing a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding terrain.

A site of spirituality and tradition

The Guadalupe Church is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, a central religious figure in Mexico. Every year on December 12, thousands of pilgrims climb the hill to celebrate the feast of the Virgin. During this time, the city fills with religious and cultural festivities that include processions, songs, and traditional dances. Even outside of this period, the church remains a quiet space for locals and visitors seeking a moment of calm.

Typical architecture and a unique setting

As you climb the steps leading to the church, you can observe the straightforward yet elegant colonial architecture of the structure, painted in bright white with accents of yellow and red. The interior is modest, decorated with religious icons and colorful altars. Once at the summit, the effort is rewarded with a view over the rooftops of San Cristóbal de las Casas and the nearby mountains.

An unforgettable ascent

The path to the Guadalupe Church is lined with small chapels and benches, allowing visitors to stop and rest along the way. Whether you are coming for a religious pilgrimage or simply to enjoy the panorama, the climb to the Guadalupe Church is a standard part of any visit to San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Best view of San Cristobal

A bit away from the city center, at the end of a long straight street, and then at the top of a small hill that you climb via stairs, this church is perfectly situated for admiring San Cristobal and its surrounding region.
I still have the memory of a magical moment when we all sat down at the top of the steps, the Guadalupe at our backs, San Cristobal at our feet, and on the horizon, the sun finishing its journey behind the mountains.

A nice viewpoint

Located on the far east side of town, you have to walk up the Calzada de la Guadalupe to reach it. Then, climb a few stairs and admire the superb view of San Cristobal and the surrounding mountains! The best time is at sunset, with a view looking west.

Exact, je garde un bon souvenir de cette fin de journée où on s'est posé là, voir le soleil se coucher
