Visiting the Zocalo, the beating heart of San Cristóbal de las Casas

The Zocalo, officially named Plaza 31 de Marzo, serves as the main hub of San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is the primary spot to observe local daily life and soak in the atmosphere. Framed by historic architecture, this square serves as the logical starting point for exploring the rest of the city.

A venue for locals and events

The Zocalo acts as the social center of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Residents and travelers gather here throughout the day to relax, talk, or attend cultural events. Featuring green spaces and a central kiosk, the square regularly hosts street performers, traditional music sets, and festivals, giving visitors a direct look at the local culture.

Notable architecture

Surrounded by period buildings, the Zocalo is anchored by the San Cristóbal Cathedral, a prominent example of colonial baroque architecture. You will also find the elegant arches of the city hall and other structures with colorful facades, which highlight the city's colonial history.

On the square itself, you can view the statue of Doctor Manuel Velasco Suarez, a former governor of the state of Chiapas.

A base for exploration

From the Zocalo, it is easy to navigate the cobblestone streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas to find artisan shops, cafes, and restaurants. The square is also near several historical sites, such as the Guadalupe Church and the former Santo Domingo Convent. Spending time around the Zocalo provides a sense of the city's identity and its pace of life.

A quiet square

Along with the cathedral square, this is one of the busiest plazas in the city. Very pleasant in the evening, with a beautiful view of the cathedral and the shopping arcades.
