Visiting the Museum of the Altos - Former Convent of Saint-Dominic

Located in the historic center of San Cristóbal de las Casas, the former Convent of Saint-Dominic stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. Built in the 16th century by the Dominican Order, this historic site is a primary stop for anyone looking to understand the colonial and religious history of Chiapas. Today, it serves as a museum while functioning as an architectural feat in its own right.

Striking Architecture

The convent is defined by its colonial baroque architecture, highlighted by a heavily decorated facade and intricate pink stone carvings. The blend of indigenous and Spanish design styles makes this structure a centerpiece of colonial building in Chiapas. Inside, visitors find altars carved from gilded wood and religious artwork that reflects the historical influence of the church across the region.

A Museum of History and Culture

The former convent now houses the Museum of the Altos - Former Convent of Saint-Dominic, which features exhibits on regional history, indigenous cultures, and traditional crafts. The museum explores the exchange between indigenous and colonial societies through collections of textiles, archaeological finds, and historical records. Visitors also encounter religious art and specific pieces detailing the timeline of the convent and the surrounding area.

A Look into the Colonial Past

Touring the grounds offers a window into the lives of the Dominican monks and their role in the conversion efforts of the region. The quiet atmosphere of the cloisters and the convent gardens provides a necessary break from the activity of the city, allowing visitors to experience the history within a calm and structured environment.

A sumptuously sculpted facade

Not a single empty space on the facade of the Saint-Dominic church. Unfortunately, in March 2018, the convent was closed and the church facade was covered in scaffolding because of the September 2017 earthquake. Monuments take a long time to get reinforced. Don't miss the craft market on the plaza in front of the church.
