Visiting the Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace is a spectacular glass structure set within the Retiro Park in Madrid. This massive glasshouse was built in the late 19th century to house an exhibition on the Philippines in 1887, which was a Spanish colony at the time. The architect, Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, also designed the Palacio de Velázquez, another cultural venue located just steps away in Retiro Park. Constructed in just five months, the Crystal Palace was conceived as a giant greenhouse meant to display tropical plants from the Philippines.

An iconic Madrid landmark

The Crystal Palace is a prime example of the iron architecture that flourished throughout Spain and the rest of Europe during the late 19th century. The architect drew inspiration from the Crystal Palace in London. Supported by an iron frame, the glass structure reaches 22 meters in height. Its facade features Ionic cast-iron columns forming a tetrastyle portico, a nod to classical antiquity. The building is decorated with friezes, mosaics, and ornaments by the ceramicist Daniel Zuloaga. The palace underwent a complete renovation in 1975.

A peaceful cultural spot in Retiro Park

The Crystal Palace sits by a small artificial lake lined with horse chestnut and bald cypress trees, a setting perfect for a stroll on a clear day. The entire area creates a quiet, reflective atmosphere. Today, the Crystal Palace serves as a satellite space for the Reina Sofia Museum of modern and contemporary art and regularly hosts exhibitions, which are enhanced by the natural light filtering through the glass roof.

A glass structure that makes its exhibits shine

Located in Retiro Park, this is a very pretty structure made of metal rods and glass panels. Inside, the art exhibits are enhanced by the light streaming through the glass vault. It seems to me that the works come from the Reina Sofia Museum.
