Bellecour Square, the grand living room of Lyon

Spanning 62,000 square meters, this is one of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe. You will find no trees in the center and no outdoor café seating on its mineral heart. It is simply a massive ochre gravel esplanade open to the sky, where locals come to stroll, picnic, or just cross through the city.

Why visit Bellecour Square?

The square has existed since the 17th century, laid out on former marshland that had belonged to the people of Lyon since the Middle Ages. It has weathered royal honors, revolutionary destruction, and later reconstruction under Napoleon. Now a registered historic monument, it remains the symbolic ground zero of Lyon, the point from which distances to other cities in France are measured.

Its location is strategic. Tucked between the Presqu'île (peninsula) and the Rhône river, just steps from the rue de la République and the Saône riverbanks, it serves as a landmark and transit point for anyone exploring the historic center.

The equestrian statue of Louis XIV

At the center sits the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, a work by the sculptor Lemot installed in 1825. It is one of the few royal equestrian statues still visible in France, as most were destroyed during the Revolution. The king is depicted in antique-style robes rather than period clothing, a stylistic choice that often surprises observant visitors.

A hub of activity

The square regularly hosts popular events. You will find a Ferris wheel and Christmas market at the end of the year, giant screens during major sporting events, or festive gatherings. It is also where the pulse of Lyon beats during major collective occasions, from the celebrations of the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) to match nights.

The facades surrounding the square blend Haussmann-style buildings with older structures, housing shops, brasseries, and the city's tourist office, located at the southeast corner.

Local tip: Come early in the morning or late in the day to enjoy the square without the tourist crowds and to watch the low light catch the statue of Louis XIV beautifully.

Such a rich history for this square

Located in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, the impressive Bellecour Square is an emblem of the city. It is known for its history of course, but also for the events that bring it to life today and the places (shopping streets and boulevards) that surround it. The Ferris wheel was set up and running on the day we visited, which was a real plus for enjoying a remarkable view of this Lyon neighborhood and the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica.

Bellecour Square and the Ferris wheel

Amidst the density of the streets in Lyon, Place Bellecour offers a breath of fresh air and blue sky.
62,000 square meters! So in the winter, while Louis XIV sits tirelessly atop his steed, a Ferris wheel is set up.
Everything is there: cotton candy, beignets, candied peanuts... Regressive pleasures...
Well... You are not necessarily going to be in seventh heaven! It is difficult to take good photos from the cabin...
If you have the Lyon City Card (I recommend it if you like sightseeing!), take advantage of it, it is included.
