Port d'Héraklion

Visiting Heraklion Port

Among the ports of Crete, the one in Heraklion is the largest and most active. Ferries from Athens dock here, and ships heading to the Cyclades and the Dodecanese depart from these piers. It is the lifeblood of the city. Some travelers value its raw, working-class feel, others enjoy the views, and everyone appreciates the energy of the waterfront. Active since the Hellenistic period, the port served a strategic purpose that attracted various invaders looking for a commercial hub. By 961, it was a major player in Mediterranean trade with a thriving economy. The port took on its recognizable shape in the 17th century under Venetian rule. Located right near the city center, a pedestrian street leads directly to the water, making for one of the easiest and most scenic walks in the city.

Venetian architecture as a backdrop

Staying true to the urban layout of Heraklion, which keeps one foot in the past and one in the present, the port is divided into two distinct sections: the Old Venetian Port and the modern transport terminal. While the latter is a busy hub with modern infrastructure for ferries and freight, the former has a rare, historic character. This is where small fishing boats come and go and pleasure craft remain docked. The beauty of this small marina is defined by its imposing historical structures. Protecting the harbor was always the primary concern for past rulers. Just 300 meters away, the Koules Fortress, a Venetian structure from 1540, looms over the reefs, joined by the Arsenal with its striking arches and the surrounding defensive walls. Local restaurants could not ask for a better setting, and many serve the catch of the day right along this historic waterfront.

Very convenient

I found this port much better organized than the one in Santorini. It is very convenient and you can find your way around pretty easily. There are many connections to other islands every day, which allows you to get around without too much trouble.

Lots of connections to Greece

The port of Heraklion is one of the most important in Crete. To arrive on the island, or to leave it to visit other places, you have a good chance of passing through here.

In itself, I did not find the port exceptional. It has the merit of being spacious and functional. A long promenade runs along it, giving you the chance to see small pleasure boats as well as enormous ferries.
