Visiting Heraklion Port
Among the ports of Crete, the one in Heraklion is the largest yet also the most dynamic. Ferries from Athens pull in here, ships bound for the Cyclades and the Dodecanese depart from here, and it remains the beating heart of the city. Some travelers love it for its authentic character, others for the sweeping views it offers, and everyone enjoys the lively atmosphere. Active since the Hellenistic period, its importance was initially strategic, drawing countless attackers who saw it as an ideal trading hub. By 961, it was already handling Mediterranean trade and supporting a flourishing economy. It took on its current shape during the 17th century under Venetian rule. Located just a short walk from downtown via a pedestrian-only street, it makes for one of the easiest and most picturesque walks you can take.
A Legacy of Venetian Architecture
True to the distinct urban layout of Heraklion, with one foot in the past and the other in the present day, the port is divided into two distinct zones: the Old Venetian Port and the modern transport hub. While the latter hums with activity using modern infrastructure to handle car ferries, freight vessels, and commercial traffic, the old port has a rarer profile filled with character and historic ruins. This is where small fishing boats come and go and recreational yachts tie up at the docks. Operating as a character-filled marina, the setting is enhanced by imposing historic structures. Protecting the harbor has always been the primary concern throughout every era. Just 300 m away, the Koules Fortress, a Venetian construction dating to 1540, looms over the reefs, flanked by the Arsenal and its graceful stone arches alongside the historic city walls. Restaurants could hardly ask for a better backdrop, and many serve up the fresh catch of the day right in this historic setting.
I found this port much better organized than the one in Santorini. It is very convenient and you can find your way around pretty easily. There are many connections to other islands every day, which allows you to get around without too much trouble.
