#1 Heraklion Port (Heraklion) +11 5

Maintaining the energy it has held since 961, Heraklion Port remains a vital city site and the largest in Greece. While the modern transport section handles ferries and freight, visitors prefer strolling the Old Venetian Port. Its marina features historic buildings leading to the 1540 Koules Fortress and the Arsenal. Enjoy this walk among local fishing boats.

#2 Piraeus Port (Piraeus) +2 3

As the primary gateway to mainland Greece, Piraeus Port features three natural bays, each with a distinct purpose. Khantaros is the largest and handles major freight and cruise vessels. Zea serves as a luxury yacht marina and a local entertainment hub. Mikrolimano, the smallest, focuses on fishing, tavernas, and scenic walks.

#3 Athinios Port (Santorini) -17 2.3

While Santorini has an international airport, many travelers arrive by ferry from Athens or other Cycladic islands. Expect crowds at Athinios Port during peak season. Nearly 12 million passengers pass through here annually. The volcanic scenery and Aegean Sea views make the 8.5 km trip to Fira worthwhile. Only cruise ships use the old port.

Lots of ferry routes to the Aegean Sea

Not a very pretty port, and not picturesque at all, but it has the merit of giving you access to many Greek destinations whether you are taking a standard ferry or a cruise. The Aegean Sea is all your…

Lots of connections to Greece

The port of Heraklion is one of the most important in Crete. To arrive on the island, or to leave it to visit other places, you have a good chance of passing through here. In itself, I did not find t…

The heartbeat of the island

Most arrivals and departures for the island of Zakynthos happen through this port. Sit down for a moment and watch people come and go, it is the pulse of the town playing out right in front of you. I…
