It is a mandatory stop during a trip to the Greek islands, but I have a bad memory of it. Ferries and tourists everywhere. Very few signs to help find your way. I wanted to take a taxi to reach my hotel, but I gave up quickly because the prices felt like a rip-off. I advise you to choose the bus. There is a lot of waiting in the summer, but at least you won't get scammed.

A really great introduction to the island. The small port is super welcoming, with plenty of nice shops and restaurants. Even if Plaka remains the preferred spot to stay, this is also a great central hub for crisscrossing the island (especially by bus)! The best part: a little cruise to go see the cliffs on the south side of the island. You will be treated like royalty on the boats, in small groups with snacks, drinks, and cheese and charcuterie if you choose the sunset option!

I found this port much better organized than the one in Santorini. It is very convenient and you can find your way around pretty easily. There are many connections to other islands every day, which allows you to get around without too much trouble.

I did my research before leaving about this port and thank goodness I did. Everything there is very poorly organized, and there are so many people, so much noise, and so much stress. It is imperative to arrive early to catch your ferry. I came about an hour ahead of time and I was right to do so. It is difficult to find your way around.

Not a very pretty port, and not picturesque at all, but it has the merit of giving you access to many Greek destinations whether you are taking a standard ferry or a cruise. The Aegean Sea is all yours, with gems in the Cyclades like romantic Santorini or festive Mykonos.

The port of Heraklion is one of the most important in Crete. To arrive on the island, or to leave it to visit other places, you have a good chance of passing through here. In itself, I did not find the port exceptional. It has the merit of being spacious and functional. A long promenade runs along it, giving you the chance to see small pleasure boats as well as enormous ferries.

Most arrivals and departures for the island of Zakynthos happen through this port. Sit down for a moment and watch people come and go, it is the pulse of the town playing out right in front of you. If you are lucky, you might also be able to see some beautiful vintage ships anchored in the waters of this port.
