Staying on 5th Avenida means the sea is less than a five-minute walk away and all of downtown is right outside the door. The flip side: the street is lively, and sometimes loud at night. If you're a light sleeper, ask for an interior-facing room when you book.

The rooms are nicely decorated for the category: warm tones, wooden furniture, Mexican handicraft details. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi come with every room. Space stays modest, as in most downtown boutique hotels. Expect functional rooms rather than spacious suites.

In Playa del Carmen, you can find giant hotel complexes right on the Caribbean Sea, with huge pools and all-inclusive packages. If that is what you are looking for, keep looking.
The Quinto Sol is a small establishment that does not look like much from the outside, but it turns out to be very pleasant on the inside.
Around a central courtyard dominated by an exotic tree, the welcoming rooms are spread over 2 or 3 floors. The small pool on the terrace is very nice for cooling off.
Regarding the location, the hotel is about a 5-minute walk from the beach, and about 10 minutes from the very center of town, where the nightclubs crank up the decibels. For the sake of your sleep, you will be happy not to be too close to that chaos!
Finally, the owners, who are sometimes at the front desk, seem really nice. And for me, that counts. If I am going to pay for lodging, I might as well know who the money is going to!
