Where to stay in Stockholm: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
Stockholm spreads over fourteen islands, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and choosing your neighbourhood really means choosing your island. Each has its character: the royal old town of Gamla Stan on its islet, the lively centre of Norrmalm, the bohemian south of Södermalm perched on its cliffs, the green museum island of Djurgården. Water is everywhere, bridges link it all, and you pass from one world to another in a few minutes on foot or by ferry.
Sweden is not cheap: a central, comfortable hotel runs 130 to 230 EUR a night, more in summer, and the dorm bed 35-50 EUR. This guide keeps four island-quarters, ranked by the favourites of Avygeo members. The metro, whose stations are true art galleries, and the ferries serve everything, and Arlanda airport is twenty minutes away by express train.

Gamla Stan La vieille ville sur son île
for a first visit, the postcard at your feet
The medieval islet at the heart of the city: the cobbled lanes, the ochre Stortorget square, the royal palace, the cathedral and the Riddarholmen church, among craft shops and candlelit cafés. Beautiful and central, a short walk from everything, it is the dream setting for a first time, at the price of a very touristy quarter by day and echoing streets, a courtyard room a bonus.

Our tips for booking the right place
- The gallery-metro, the ferry and the SL card : Stockholm's metro is an underground museum in itself, with its painted and sculpted stations: an SL day or week card covers metro, bus, tram and local ferries. The ferries link Gamla Stan, Djurgården and Slussen, and the archipelago cruise leaves from the centre. The Arlanda Express speeds from the airport to the centre in twenty minutes.
- Bright summer, cosy winter and the fika : From May to August, the endless days and the waterside terraces give the best of Stockholm, with high-season crowds and prices. Winter is dark but magical, between snow, candles and cheaper hotels. All year, treat yourself to a fika, the coffee-and-cinnamon-bun break, a national ritual to savour in an old neighbourhood café.
- The archipelago, Fotografiska and the viewpoints : Set aside half a day for the archipelago, its thousands of islands reachable by boat from Strömkajen, and climb Monteliusvägen on Södermalm at sunset for the finest view over the city and the water. For culture, the Fotografiska photo museum and its panoramic café-restaurant are worth the detour; at the table, taste Swedish meatballs and herring in an old-time konditori.
- Booking far out in the suburbs along the metro to save: Stockholm is lived on its central islands, between water and bridges, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for Gamla Stan, Norrmalm or Södermalm.
- Taking a room on the very busy pedestrian streets of Gamla Stan or near the Söder bars for light sleepers: the buzz lasts late; prefer a courtyard room or a quiet street.
- Renting a car to stay in town: parking is dear and scarce, urban tolls many; the metro, ferries and walking are enough, and a car only helps for the mainland beyond.
