Where to stay in Stockholm: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

Stockholm spreads over fourteen islands, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and choosing your neighbourhood really means choosing your island. Each has its character: the royal old town of Gamla Stan on its islet, the lively centre of Norrmalm, the bohemian south of Södermalm perched on its cliffs, the green museum island of Djurgården. Water is everywhere, bridges link it all, and you pass from one world to another in a few minutes on foot or by ferry.

Sweden is not cheap: a central, comfortable hotel runs 130 to 230 EUR a night, more in summer, and the dorm bed 35-50 EUR. This guide keeps four island-quarters, ranked by the favourites of Avygeo members. The metro, whose stations are true art galleries, and the ferries serve everything, and Arlanda airport is twenty minutes away by express train.

for a first visit, the postcard at your feet

The medieval islet at the heart of the city: the cobbled lanes, the ochre Stortorget square, the royal palace, the cathedral and the Riddarholmen church, among craft shops and candlelit cafés. Beautiful and central, a short walk from everything, it is the dream setting for a first time, at the price of a very touristy quarter by day and echoing streets, a courtyard room a bonus.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The gallery-metro, the ferry and the SL card : Stockholm's metro is an underground museum in itself, with its painted and sculpted stations: an SL day or week card covers metro, bus, tram and local ferries. The ferries link Gamla Stan, Djurgården and Slussen, and the archipelago cruise leaves from the centre. The Arlanda Express speeds from the airport to the centre in twenty minutes.
  • Bright summer, cosy winter and the fika : From May to August, the endless days and the waterside terraces give the best of Stockholm, with high-season crowds and prices. Winter is dark but magical, between snow, candles and cheaper hotels. All year, treat yourself to a fika, the coffee-and-cinnamon-bun break, a national ritual to savour in an old neighbourhood café.
  • The archipelago, Fotografiska and the viewpoints : Set aside half a day for the archipelago, its thousands of islands reachable by boat from Strömkajen, and climb Monteliusvägen on Södermalm at sunset for the finest view over the city and the water. For culture, the Fotografiska photo museum and its panoramic café-restaurant are worth the detour; at the table, taste Swedish meatballs and herring in an old-time konditori.
Where not to stay in Stockholm (honestly)
  • Booking far out in the suburbs along the metro to save: Stockholm is lived on its central islands, between water and bridges, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for Gamla Stan, Norrmalm or Södermalm.
  • Taking a room on the very busy pedestrian streets of Gamla Stan or near the Söder bars for light sleepers: the buzz lasts late; prefer a courtyard room or a quiet street.
  • Renting a car to stay in town: parking is dear and scarce, urban tolls many; the metro, ferries and walking are enough, and a car only helps for the mainland beyond.

FAQ: where to stay in Stockholm

Which area for a first time in Stockholm?
Gamla Stan, the old town on its island, for the palace, the lanes and the postcard at the hotel's door, or Norrmalm right next door to stay central with more amenities and transport. Both put the essentials on foot and a few minutes by metro.
Where to stay in Stockholm on a budget?
The hostels of the centre and Södermalm (City Backpackers, Långholmen, af Chapman) from 35-50 EUR a bed, and the chain hotels a little out along the metro. Sweden stays dear: book early and aim for weeknights and winter, often far cheaper.
Which area for families?
Djurgården, the green museum island, for the Vasa, Skansen, the ABBA museum and the Gröna Lund fair, or Norrmalm to have everything within metro reach. The short distances, the ferries and the many parks make the city very easy with children.
Where to go out at night in Stockholm?
Södermalm gathers the hip bars, clubs and terraces, while Östermalm and the centre line up smarter spots and restaurants. Stureplan is the heart of the upscale night. The mood is friendly and safe; a beer by the water or a rooftop rounds off the evening well.
Do you need a car in Stockholm?
No: the metro, buses, trams and ferries serve the whole city and the islands, and the Arlanda Express links the airport in twenty minutes. Parking is dear and city driving discouraged by tolls; keep the car to explore the mainland archipelago.
How much does a hotel night cost in Stockholm?
Reckon 130 to 230 EUR for a comfortable, central room, more in summer and in the waterfront palaces; a hostel bed drops to 35-50 EUR. The summer high season and big events form the peaks, to book early.
