Things to do in Badesi: must-see attractions

Visiting Badesi, the wild spirit of the Sardinian coast

The heady scent of the maquis, a mix of immortelle and myrtle, carried by a breeze that never really quits. That is the first thing that hits you when you arrive in Badesi. Before you even see the sea, you smell it, you breathe it. This is not the polished Sardinia of postcards but a raw landscape, sculpted by the mistral wind, where nature keeps the upper hand and the horizon feels endless.

Badesi: the verdict for your trip

Let us be direct: Badesi is a promise of freedom for a specific type of traveler. It is the perfect home base for families who want space to spread out on the beach, for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts who track the weather forecast with fervor, and for anyone looking for an authentic Sardinia that remains accessible, far from the glitz of the Costa Smeralda. If you like grand landscapes and long walks on the sand at sunset, you have found your spot.

On the other hand, if your ideal vacation involves a picturesque fishing village where you can stroll around in the evening, you might feel a bit out of place. The town of Badesi is modern, functional, and perched on a hill a few miles from the coastline. Fans of historic stone architecture and active nightlife will want to keep moving. A car is not an option, it is vital. It is the key to connecting the village to the beach, exploring nearby coves, and venturing into the backcountry. The rhythm here is dictated by the sun and the wind, not by the clock.

The kingdom of sand and wind

The main draw of Badesi is its coastline. And what a coastline it is. We are not talking about small rocky inlets here, but a ribbon of golden sand that stretches for miles, bathed by a sea with turquoise and emerald hues. It is an endless playground where, even in the middle of August, you only need to walk a little to find your own patch of peace.

Li Junchi Beach

This is the main beach, accessible from Badesi Mare. It is so vast that it goes by several names depending on the access point. Its beauty lies in its wild character, bordered by dunes and juniper bushes. The wind is often present, which can stir up the sea but thrills those into water sports. It is the perfect place for active beach days or simply to watch the power of the elements, with the profile of the town of Castelsardo visible in the distance.

Friend's tip: For a calmer day, especially with young children, check the wind direction. If the mistral is blowing hard, opt for the neighboring beach of Li Mindi, which is sometimes a bit more sheltered, or explore the coves of Costa Paradiso, about a 20-minute drive away.

The call of the open water: boardsports and excursions

The constant wind makes Badesi one of the most reputable spots in northern Sardinia for boardsports. Several kitesurfing and windsurfing schools are set up along the beach, offering lessons and rentals for all skill levels. Seeing the sky fill with kite wings at sunset is a show in itself. But the water is not just for boards. It is also an excellent starting point for excursions.

  • Take a kayak or paddleboard trip along the coast to discover corners inaccessible on foot.
  • Head up the mouth of the Coghinas river, a tranquil oasis where you can spot plenty of birds.
  • Embark on a boat day trip into the Gulf of Asinara to discover its crystal-clear water and poignant history.

Friend's tip: If you are a beginner at kitesurfing, book a lesson early in the morning. The thermal breeze is often softer and more consistent before the afternoon mistral kicks in for good.

The Gallura backcountry: vineyards and granite villages

Turning your back to the sea reveals another facet of the region, the Gallura. It is a landscape of rolling hills covered in cork oaks, strangely shaped granite rocks carved by erosion, and lush vineyards.

Grab your car and head out to discover villages like Aggius, ranked among the most beautiful in Italy with its stone houses and artisanal traditions, or Tempio Pausania, the granite heart of the Gallura. The drive itself is a trip, offering spectacular views around every turn.

Friend's tip: The region is the birthplace of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, the only Sardinian white wine to benefit from this prestigious designation. Stop at a local cantina, like Cantina Li Duni, for a tasting. It is the best way to taste the soul of this terroir.

Where to eat and drink in Badesi?

Local cuisine is a successful marriage between the flavors of the land and the sea. In the restaurants of Badesi Mare, you will find fresh grilled fish and seafood. But for a more authentic experience, head up to the village or venture into an agriturismo in the backcountry. That is where you will taste the real cucina gallurese, including the famous zuppa gallurese, a rich dish made with bread, sheep cheese, and meat broth.

Do not miss the porceddu (roast suckling pig) and local cheeses, such as pecorino sardo.

Where to stay in and around Badesi?

The choice depends on your priorities. In Badesi Mare, you will find vacation residences, apartments, and a few large hotels with direct or very close access to the beach, perfect for a beach-focused stay.

In the village of Badesi, on the hill, the options are more centered on B&Bs and rentals, offering a more local experience but requiring a car to get to the beach. For total immersion in Sardinian tranquility, opt for an agriturismo in the surrounding countryside, tucked between vineyards and olive trees.

How to get to and around Badesi?

The most convenient airports are Olbia (OLB) and Alghero (AHO), both located about a 1 hour and 15 minute drive away.

Regardless of your arrival point, renting a car is essential. There is no efficient public transport for visiting the region or even for moving easily within the municipality. A car will give you the freedom to explore different beaches, visit the backcountry, and run errands without constraints. Parking is generally easy and free, except in some beach parking lots that get busy during high season.

From Badesi to Santa Teresa Gallura via the SP90: stunning views

I biked along the SP90 in May between Badesi and Santa Teresa Gallura, and it was a real treat! This winding road offers breathtaking views of the sea, with gorgeous coves and beaches to discover along the way. When you're on a bike, you can really take in the scenery, which is harder to do in a car. Just watch out for the traffic, as it can get pretty heavy on some stretches.
