Where to stay in Rouen: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
All of old Rouen sits on the right bank, and all of it is pedestrian. Keep that in mind before booking: between the cathedral, the Gros-Horloge and the place du Vieux-Marché, you never walk more than fifteen minutes. What separates the areas is atmosphere, never travel time.
Then come four areas, from the Gothic parvis to the redeveloped docks. Few hostels in this mid-sized city: count on 60 to 110 EUR for a characterful double, more in the historic houses. The Rive-Droite station puts Paris 1h15 away.
Wandering along the many pedestrian streets around the majestic cathedral is my favorite activity, especially on Sunday mornings or after dark. It is the best time to enjoy the many half-timbered houses with their sometimes improbable shapes.

Cathedral & Saint-Maclou The Gothic heart
for a first visit, half-timbering and the Gothic
The postcard Rouen: Notre-Dame cathedral and its lacework facade, Monet's, the tallest cast-iron spire in France, the flamboyant Saint-Maclou church and its astonishing aître, a former plague cemetery with beams carved with dances of death, and the tangle of timbered lanes around Rue Saint-Romain. Lovely but very busy by day, it empties at night, and you sleep at the foot of the monuments.

Vieux-Marché & Gros-Horloge The market centre
for shopping, restaurants and atmosphere
The lively, commercial centre: the Place du Vieux-Marché, where Joan of Arc was burned and which a modern longship-shaped church now watches over, its market hall and restaurants, the Rue du Gros-Horloge and its gilded astronomical clock straddling the street, and the pedestrian shopping streets. Busy from morning to night, a touch louder than the cathedral quarter, it is the handiest for tables and boutiques.

The Rouen of great organs and museums, north of the centre: the Saint-Ouen abbey church, a Gothic masterpiece almost as vast as a cathedral, the town hall at its feet, the Fine Arts Museum and its Monets and Caravaggio, the Ceramics Museum and the offbeat Le Secq des Tournelles Museum, devoted to ironwork, in a church. More residential and peaceful, with the collections at the door, it is the sector to breathe, five minutes from the cathedral.

Seine Quays & Station Riverside and station
for convenience, the quays and low prices
The practical Rouen of the river and the train: the right-bank Seine quays, reworked into a promenade with open-air bars and barges facing the water, the Belle Époque Rive-Droite station a ten-minute walk north, the keep known as Joan of Arc's tower, the castle's only remnant, and the Kindarena arena. Without the charm of the lanes but very well connected, with the station and the quays at the door, it is the sector of tight prices and easy arrival.
I sometimes like to leave the center to walk along the Seine, go under the many bridges that span the river, and have a beer not far from the docks, a neighborhood that was recently redeveloped along the water.

The city's other B&B, the left-bank one, in the Saint-Sever district: a metro stop a hundred metres away and old Rouen across the bridge. The lowest price in town, minus the medieval setting.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Everything on foot, the car in the car park: Rouen's medieval centre is entirely pedestrian and compact: everything is seen on foot, from one spire to the next. The metro and the Astuce bus and tram network round it out, notably towards the left bank. The Rive-Droite station puts Paris an hour and a quarter away. If you arrive by car, leave it in an edge car park or at the hotel: the historic heart is closed to it.
- Chase Monet's light, aim for the Armada: Like Monet, come back to see the cathedral facade at different hours: it changes utterly from morning to night. Every four to six years, the Armada gathers the world's greatest tall ships on the quays, a huge crowd and hotels taken by storm. Spring and autumn offer the city mild and crowd-free; in summer, Normandy and its beaches are an hour away.
- Duck, cider and the Impressionists route: Rouen is savoured Norman: a Rouen-style duck, a camembert or a heart-shaped neufchâtel, a teurgoule, all washed down with cider or calvados. Then push on to Giverny and Monet's garden, three-quarters of an hour away, or follow the Seine and its cliffs on the Impressionists route towards Honfleur and Étretat.
- Booking far out in the suburbs or on the heights to save: Rouen's medieval centre is lived on foot, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for a central quarter or the quays.
- Lodging right by the station for the sole convenience of the train: the sector is handy but charmless, whereas old Rouen is a ten-minute walk away, far more pleasant.
- Choosing a room on a Vieux-Marché restaurant street for light sleepers: the terraces liven summer evenings; better a courtyard room or the cathedral side, quieter.
