Where to stay in Nantes: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
Nantes made its fortune on the Loire, and its centre no longer touches it. In the 1930s the city filled in the river's side channels and covered the Erdre: what you will take for a wide boulevard, the cours des 50-Otages, used to be a river. So sleeping by the water here means neither Bouffay nor Graslin, but the Île de Nantes or the quays.
Five areas follow, each with its most recommended spots on Avygeo and the drawbacks worth knowing before you book. Prices barely shift from one area to the next: a decent room right in the centre sits between 90 and 140 EUR, a simple address between 60 and 80, a dorm bed around 30.
I lived there for nearly two years. It is a very pleasant city, always lively, and easy to explore on foot in a few days.

Bouffay and the castle Medieval centre, north bank
for a first visit and for doing everything on foot
This is the oldest Nantes: cobbled lanes, half-timbered houses, and the Château des ducs de Bretagne, whose courtyard, moat and ramparts are free to walk, with only the museum charging entry. Place du Bouffay is the city's restaurant block, brasseries, creperies and world kitchens in a row. That is the area's strength and its flaw: you eat downstairs, and the terraces run late on Friday and Saturday.

The first five-star in central Nantes, set in a mansion on rue du Roi Albert, a hundred metres from the cathedral. Just thirteen rooms, a restaurant and a wine cellar.

A four-star on rue de Strasbourg, at the foot of the castle and in the heart of Bouffay. Compact, well-planned rooms, a sauna, and a large shared lounge where drinks are served in the evening.

Nineteen very plain rooms at 4 rue du Bouffay, a few steps from the square. The floor price for sleeping in old Nantes, provided you accept the noise from the terraces.

Graslin, place Royale and Commerce 18th-century centre, north bank
for the shops, the theatres and the trams
The Nantes of the shipowners: pale facades, the columns of the Théâtre Graslin, the fountain on place Royale, and the Passage Pommeraye, a covered arcade on three levels that people cross for the pleasure of it. This is the area of shops and stages. Two streets away, place du Commerce is the hub where all three tram lines stop: very practical, less pleasant, and a member from Nantes puts it better than we can.
Despite some recent efforts to improve the area, it is hard to feel comfortable there. The square can be pretty dangerous, especially at night, and you have to stay on your guard.

Île de Nantes Between the two arms of the Loire
to sleep facing the river and for the Machines
The shipyards closed in 1987 and the island they occupied became the new piece of the city: the Machines de l'île, the old boat halls, and a long walk along the quays. It is the only area with a real view of the Loire, and the quietest at night. The downside is clear: neighbourhood life is still thin here, few shops open in the evening, and you have to cross a bridge again to eat anywhere but your hotel. No upmarket address either.

Apartments with kitchens at the eastern tip of the island, near the Tripode stop. The right call with children or for several nights, but count on the tram to reach the Machines.

On boulevard de la Prairie au Duc, five minutes' walk from the Machines: single rooms, family rooms and dorms in the same building, with a bar-restaurant open to all. The cheapest bed in this guide.

for arriving by train and leaving early
Nantes station has two exits, and the north one opens onto the Jardin des Plantes: seven hectares of glasshouses, flower beds and animal pens, open and free. Jeanne-Sbrn puts its real use best: the garden « a perfect place to wait for your train while surrounded by greenery, animals, and pretty flowers. ». It is the most practical area in the city for a short stay, and the plainest to look at: offices, recent blocks, and a quarter of an hour's walk to the old streets.

Hauts-Pavés, Talensac and the Erdre North of the centre, along the Erdre
for quiet and for gentler prices
North of the centre begins the city people live in: residential streets, the Talensac market every morning except Monday, and the Île de Versailles, a Japanese garden set on the Erdre. Jeanne-Sbrn, a Nantes local, says she goes there to leave the noise and pollution behind. The quiet is real, and so is the trade-off: the choice comes down to a few two-stars and apartment residences, and it takes twenty minutes on foot or two tram stops to reach Bouffay.

Our tips for booking the right place
- The tram replaces the car, the Navibus crosses the Loire: Three tram lines cross at place du Commerce and serve the five areas in this guide; the Navibus crosses the Loire between the centre and the south bank. labaroudeuzh sums it up: « public transportation options are ideal (tram, river shuttle, bus [...] when you do not have a car ». Take a hotel less than five minutes from a stop and you will need nothing else.
- Your dates weigh more than your stars: Nantes has no marked high season, but it does have peaks: Le Voyage à Nantes in July and August, conventions at the Cité, and match nights at La Beaujoire. On those dates the central hotels fill first and the prices follow. An ordinary weekend in March or November costs distinctly less than a Saturday in August.
- Old Nantes is smaller than it looks: From the castle to the Théâtre Graslin there is one kilometre and two squares to cross. From any of the three central areas you will do everything on foot, and the best-placed address will not save you more than ten minutes a trip. So choose on the mood of the street and on the price.
- Booking on the edge of place du Commerce for the convenience of the trams without looking at what happens below: it is the crossroads of the whole city, very busy by day and unwelcoming at night. One street back is enough to change the stay, and you keep the same stops.
- Taking a room on the Île de Nantes expecting the life of the centre: the island is for visiting, not for going out. Once the Machines close, you have to cross a bridge again to eat anywhere but your hotel. It is an excellent choice for the river and the quiet, not for a stay where you walk home late.
- Choosing a hotel near La Beaujoire or Atlantis, in Saint-Herblain, because the rate is lower: those areas are five kilometres from the centre and built for the stadium and the retail parks. The tram goes there, but count on around twenty minutes a trip, twice a day.
